Job Title: Controls Engineer


Location: On-site (Woburn, MA)


Overview:

Emvolon Inc. (www.emvolon.com) is a venture-backed MIT spin-off focused on converting greenhouse gases into carbon-negative fuels and chemicals such as green methanol. Our innovative platform transforms automotive engines into modular reactors to enable on-site fuel production.


Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Controls Engineer to design, implement, and optimize advanced control systems for dynamic energy, chemical, and process applications. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in embedded and/or industrial (PLC based) control systems development, with applications across engines, industrial processes, or oil & gas operations. This role requires expertise in modeling, algorithm development, and real-time implementation to enhance efficiency, safety, and environmental performance of complex systems.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement control strategies for thermal, fluid, and chemical process systems including combustion, flow regulation, and energy conversion.
  • Design, code, and validate control algorithms for real-time applications in engines, compressors, turbines, or process equipment.
  • Model and simulate dynamic systems using MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent tools to support control design and optimization.
  • Support integration of control software into programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and electronic control units (ECUs).
  • Conduct system testing, calibration, and troubleshooting in laboratory, pilot plant, or field environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineers) to ensure robust process and equipment integration.
  • Apply control solutions for gas handling, compression, separation, and flaring reduction systems, ensuring compliance with safety and emissions regulations.
  • Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and validation procedures in line with industry standards.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • 3 years of experience in embedded controls, process automation, or dynamic system modeling.
  • Experience with process control equipment, PLC/DCS systems, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, CAN, OPC).
  • Understanding of control theory, real-time systems, and embedded software development (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, C/C , ).
  • Familiarity with oil & gas or energy systems: compressors, pumps, reactors, or thermal/fluid processes.
  • Knowledge of process safety standards and applicable regulations (e.g., IEC 61511/61508, API, or OSHA guidelines).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.


Location, Travel & Work Authorization:

  • This is a full-time, on-site role based at our Woburn, MA facility. We are seeking candidates who can work in person as part of a highly collaborative, hands-on engineering team. While the role is primarily office and lab-based, periodic travel is expected to support commissioning and troubleshooting activities at partner and pilot plant sites.
