ERS is seeking a Legal Assistant to perform highly advanced (senior-level) administrative and legal assistant work in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). Work involves researching, analyzing, investigating, and drafting legal documents and assisting with the management of various legal matters. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
With regard to the Public Information Act, processes incoming requests for public information and provides administrative support to attorneys handling requests, including the preparation of correspondence and legal briefs, research and analysis, deadline management, file management, and the preparation of reports; coordinates the gathering of documents responsive to requests; assists with the dissemination of information to other agency departments and the training of agency staff; assists in the development of policies and procedures.
With regard to Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDROs), processes incoming orders and related documents and provides administrative support to attorneys handling QDROS, including the preparation of correspondence and other documents, research and analysis, deadline management, file management, and the preparation of reports; assists in the development of policies and procedures.
With regard to general legal work, maintains complex legal, administrative, security, and other records; prepares, reviews, and edits legal documents and complex correspondence; assists in the development of policies and procedures.
Serves as OGCs central point of contact for both external individuals and internal agency staff; serves as a backup to other administrative staff as needed.
Prepares special reports; assists staff in compiling and analyzing data for report preparation; maintains report files.
Serves as a travel coordinator.
Leads or participates on special projects, task forces, and committees.
Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including policies and procedures related to safety and standards of conduct.
Performs other duties as assigned.

- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Each year of related experience over the required minimum may be substituted for one year (30 semester hours) of required college credit.
- Four (4) years of experience performing advanced legal work as a legal assistant or paralegal or in a related field (e.g. contract administration or management), which must include drafting, proofreading, and editing written materials, including correspondence.
- Four (4) years of experience using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and database software.
- Three (3) years of experience supporting multiple attorneys or other professionals.
- E perience with the Public Information Act or Freedom of Information Act.
- Experience with the travel requirements that apply to Texas state agencies.
- Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) experience.
