What are the responsibilities and job description for the Autonomous Vehicle Operations Technician position at Empire?
We are seeking a Autonomous Vehicle Operations Technician (VH6 Associate) to support day-to-day fleet operations. In this role, you’ll be responsible for ensuring vehicles are fully prepared and ready on time for scheduled tests and service operations on the VH6 platform, with occasional support for L3 vehicles.
Your work will include daily vehicle upkeep—such as cleaning, charging, and software bring-up—as well as maintaining an organized, professional test-site environment. As part of the Mission Readiness team, you’ll help ensure vehicles meet regulatory requirements by following established guidelines, and you’ll collaborate with the parts team to organize and transport spare parts inventory.
Responsibilities
Primary
- Support company milestones by helping optimize drive operations across multiple locations
- Ensure vehicles, equipment, and workspaces are clean, safe, and ready for use
- Provide logistical support for the movement and storage of vehicles and equipment
- Assist with vehicle readiness documentation and related paperwork
- Perform routine charging of test vehicles and supporting equipment
- Execute mission preparation procedures, including launching software across multiple devices per vehicle, verifying hardware and software configurations, deploying software as needed, capturing requested data, and escalating issues when necessary
- Support vehicle recovery efforts as a member of the Incident Response Team
- Help maintain spare parts readiness and manage associated inventory
Secondary
- Provide hands-on technical support to BaseOps technicians (e.g., fluid changes, part replacements, wiring checks)
- Assist with general testing activities, including documentation, pre-mission support, cone courses, obstacle setup, traffic control, and driving support vehicles
Requirements
- 2–4 years of relevant work experience
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience maintaining electric, hybrid, or autonomous vehicles (required)
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Technical trade school certificate or Associate Degree in automotive repair
- Ability to travel locally and nationally (less than 30%)
- Strong sense of urgency, safety-first mindset, and a “get it done” attitude
- Proven ability to problem-solve and perform under pressure
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities and deliverables
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Team-oriented and collaborative working style
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and use carts, dollies, hand trucks, and similar equipment
- Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, kneel, reach, and use stairs during shifts
- Ability to pass a background check, motor vehicle record (MVR) check, and drug screening
- Compliance with the company’s Substance Abuse Policy
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using Jira and Confluence
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment
