Job Summary:

The Fabrication Operator is responsible for producing custom metal components using manual fabrication equipment such as ironworkers and bending machines. This role requires hands-on material handling, precise measurement, and interpretation of blueprints to create parts that often fall outside standard catalog specifications. The Fabrication Operator ensures accuracy, quality, and safety throughout all fabrication processes while maintaining a clean and organized work environment. This position is ideal for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to varied and custom production requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate fabrication equipment such as ironworkers (shear/punch) and horizontal bending machines in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
  • Perform manual material handling including positioning, lifting, and moving parts by hand or with hoists.
  • Read, interpret, and follow production orders, blueprints, and work instructions to fabricate parts that may not conform to standard catalog specifications.
  • Ensure dimensional accuracy and quality by inspecting parts and identifying non-conforming products according to company standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation for production and quality control.
  • Adhere to all safety programs, including lockout/tagout, PPE requirements, hoist operation safety, and fire/electrical safety.
  • Communicate clearly regarding equipment status and initiate correction action in the event of faults or malfunctions.
  • Clean and maintain work areas, machines, and assigned tools to ensure a safe and organized environment.
  • Transport raw materials and finishing goods using hoists, carts, or pallet jacks as required.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown or tooling for fabrication equipment.
  • Perform basic assembly or finishing operations as needed according to work standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production goals.

Qualifications:

  • Must pass a company-administered mechanical aptitude test
  • Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and basic measurement tools
  • Experience operating hand tools, gauges, and production machinery preferred
  • High level of attention to detail and safety awareness
  • Prior experience as a press operator in a manufacturing setting is strongly preferred

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Previous press operation experience within the company or equivalent external experience preferred

Mental & Cognitive Requirements:

  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, including safety procedures and work orders.
  • Basic math skills to monitor part counts, measurements, or setups.
  • Strong attention to detail to identify defects or issues with materials.
  • Ability to remain alert and focused in a repetitive or fast-paced work environment.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills for addressing minor machine issues or material inconsistencies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 8-10 hours per shift)
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and stooping.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for handling materials and operating machinery.
  • Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection.
  • Tolerance to loud environments (ear protection provided).
  • Visual acuity to read gauges, labels, and inspect parts.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, and varying temperatures.
  • May be exposed to oil, grease, metal shavings, dust, and other production-related materials and byproducts.
  • The environment may be fast-paced with frequent interruptions and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.
  • Use of PPE is mandatory as per company policy and safety guidelines.
