Description:
The Assistant Program Director will assist in directing the strategic, operational, and administrative activities of the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Research Program, which supports a diverse portfolio of NIH-funded, foundation, and industry-sponsored studies. This position plays a key leadership role in program development, research operations, regulatory and financial oversight, and inter-institutional collaboration to advance clinical and translational IBD research.

The Assistant Program Director will oversee day-to-day operations of multi-site clinical studies, assist in developing standard operating procedures and data management systems, and ensure all activities comply with Good Clinical Practice, IRB, and sponsor requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists in directing the strategic planning, development, and implementation of programs.
  • Represents the organization at meetings, conferences and other events.
  • May develop and present speeches or presentations to generate or enhance awareness of program(s).
  • Provides technical support by evaluating established processes, conducting training, attending operational meetings and networking with affiliated groups.
  • Monitors progress toward achieving established objectives and deadlines.
  • Participates in planning, administering and monitoring program related budgets.
  • Conducts research, designs new initiatives, and collaborates with others to ensure program(s) remain viable.
  • May serve on, hold office in, or chair committees.
  • May write publishable articles and papers.
  • May supervise staff.
  • Oversees or assists in developing operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures required records and documentation are maintained.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETIALS: In addition to the duties outlined above, the Assistant Director may be required to:
  • Support budget planning and reconciliation, monitoring sub-award performance, and coordinating with Emory’s research administration offices to ensure accurate financial and regulatory reporting.
  • The role will also involve preparing study progress reports, data summaries, and presentations for program leadership, sponsors, and consortium partners; contributing to grant proposals and manuscripts.
  • Assist in designing new initiatives to strengthen research capacity and scientific output.
  • The incumbent will supervise and mentor research staff, oversee training and performance development, and promote process improvement across program operations.
  • The Assistant Program Director will also develop operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies, ensure documentation is complete and compliant, and represent the program at meetings, conferences, and multi-site collaborations.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in clinical research management, experience coordinating complex multi-site studies, and the ability to lead projects from start-up through implementation and reporting.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively across clinical, research, and administrative teams in a fast-paced academic environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to the program(s) and five years of program related experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior experience in pediatric and/or gastrointestinal research.
  • Proven experience leading study start-ups, managing sub-awards, and overseeing post-award budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced academic research environment with diverse clinical, research, and administrative stakeholders.
  • Experience with federal, foundation, and industry-sponsored or multi-site studies strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Emory University’s financial systems, regulatory processes, and research administration infrastructure is a plus.
NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
