Description
We're seeking a Surgical Assistant who assists attending surgeon, surgical resident and/or physician's assistant during surgical procedures including retraction, hemostasis, suctioning, suturing, suture organization, wound management and other assistance as necessary. This individual:
- Assists in opening and closing the patient's spine.
- Assists in opening and closing surgical wounds.
- Performs debridement of primary and secondary closure of muscle flaps.
- Employees in some areas may be required to assist with bone grafts, as well as, harvest and prepare bone graft for spinal fusion.
- Assists in spine procedures including anterior cervical disectomy/fusion, posterior cervical fusion, anterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, posterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, and insertion of spinal instruments.
- Preps, positions, catherizes, and drapes patients and assists in exposing and suturing wounds.
- Assists in management of patients during emergency situations.
- Maintains confidentiality, patient privacy, and operation room standards.
- Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development.
- Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
- Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
- Complies with and adheres to departmental policies and procedures in accordance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board.
- Successful completion of the Emory Surgical Assistant training program or a Registered Nurse/Physician's Assistant nationally certified as an Registered Nurse First Assistant.
- BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
