Vocation
The pianist serves the congregation of Emmanuel Lutheran Church by faithfully supporting the worship life of the church through music. The pianist’s God-given musical gifts are offered up to God, that the congregation may join in offering up their praise to God throughout the liturgy.
About the position
We worship Sundays, celebrating Holy Communion in a traditional liturgy. One Sunday each month, we layer in contemporary music in lieu of some hymns throughout our traditional service. We are therefore hoping to find a pianist who will regularly accompany our contemporary music, but who is also able to play the liturgy. An ideal candidate would be a strong pianist, who is also able to play the organ, and willing to serve as a backup organist on occasion. We are a congregation in the North American Lutheran Church and rely almost entirely on the Lutheran Book of Worship for our liturgy.
Responsibilities
- Reliable, prepared, on-time, dependable
- Provide piano accompaniment for one Sunday per month (typically the third Sunday) for (1) the liturgy; (2) the music (hymns and contemporary); and (3) prelude, postlude, & the offertory. Whereas the majority of this music is pre-selected, the choice of prelude & postlude would be the responsibility of the pianist, in collaboration with the pastor and organist.
- Demonstrate familiarity with the Lutheran liturgy & the ability to follow the structure and flow of the service
- Coordinate with the organist and pastor for the planning of the service and with other musicians as needed; Participate in scheduled rehearsals; & Accompany other instrumentalists (e.g., woodwinds) as needed
- Serve as substitute pianist for other services when available as needed
Preferred
- The ability to serve as back up organist for other services (funerals, other Sunday services, etc.) as needed.
Compensation & Schedule
- Commitment: One Sunday per month occasional rehearsals or special services
- Compensation: up to $200 per worship service
Evaluation
- Review 30 & 60 days
- Annual evaluation thereafter
