Physician Extender – Athletic Trainer Certified

Athletic Trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention. A physician extender works in conjunction with the physician to facilitate an effective and efficient clinical environment to provide a high standard of care and a positive patient experience.

The incumbent has direct patient contact primarily for the evaluation and treatment of medical and musculoskeletal pathology consistent with the scope and practice of athletic training clinical competencies as defined by the BOC. The incumbent must perform many of the outlined tasks with minimal or no supervision in the clinical setting and in the field. Patients include pediatric through geriatric populations in the clinical setting. The incumbent has access to and knowledge of confidential medical information regarding patients' medical history.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Athletic Training from an accredited college or university. Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum two years’ experience practicing as a Certified Athletic Trainer or one year as an Athletic Trainer in a Physician’s practice preferred
  • License/Certification/Registration - Certified as an ATC by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC), AHA CPR certification required. Eligible for an ATC license in North Carolina
  • Professional competency as outlined by NATABOC practice domains

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following

  • Provides assessments of patients including review of pertinent medical history information, the performance of specific assessments; determination of recommendations, and accurately communicates and presents this information to the physician. Ability to navigate assigned EMR effectively
  • Acts as a physician-patient liaison in both surgical and nonsurgical conditions in conveying concerns and information. Responsible for educating patients and ensuring that the physician's instructions/protocols are understood and adhered to by the patient
  • As needed, assists with patient needs for DME including but not limited to: Crutches, Braces, Splints, and Casts. As well as appropriately educate, fit, apply, and remove
  • Takes an active role in the chain of command and is a navigator to continue the referral process to service the patient’s needs with the goal to increase volumes (i.e., physicians, physical therapy, and imaging)
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, in-service meetings, workshops, independent learning experiences, and other forums
  • Other Duties and responsibilities as assigned (Physician Extender, Cast Tech, etc.)

  • Follows all applicable department and practice policies and procedures
  • Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA privacy and confidentiality guidelines established by the practice
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
  • Computer input of patient information
  • Participates in mandatory staff functions as directed by the Clinical manager (may include overtime)
  • Performs all other tasks and projects delegated or assigned by the Clinical Manager
  • Maintains a pleasant and cooperative demeanor while performing all duties
  • Maintains compliance with continuing education requirements to maintain current certifications, licensure, etc.
  • Performs other duties as required and assigned by Manager, including schedule changes and travel to office locations as assigned
