Emergency Technical Decon is seeking a detail-oriented Industrial Sewing Associate for our Portland, OR facility. This role will contribute to the restoration and extended life of firefighter turnout gear by performing skilled repairs using industrial sewing equipment. Working in a specialized facility dedicated to firefighter health and safety, you’ll ensure that all stitching, patching, and structural reinforcements meet NFPA standards and ETD’s rigorous quality controls. This role requires precision, reliability, and a deep respect for the protective gear that first responders rely on in hazardous environments.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate and maintain sewing machines and related tools for gear repair and alteration, including pattern plates, needles, presser feet, automatic cutting tools and blades.
- Interpret work orders to select appropriate materials, attachments, and settings.
- Perform inspections and repairs to turnout gear per manufacturer specifications
- Apply patches, adjust hems/sleeves, replace wristlets, and install accessories (e.g., holders, zippers)
- Prepare materials for embellishment or reinforcement using approved methods (no pins/needles on gear)
- Record materials used, repairs completed, and output for each shift
- Troubleshoot minor machine issues and request service when needed
- Ensure repairs maintain compliance with MFG and NFPA standards
- Meet or exceeds consistent daily and weekly output and quality goals
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3 years industrial sewing experience desired.
- Experience with industrial sewing machines and repair tools (lockstitch, overlock, etc.).
- Basic knowledge of textiles and PPE materials (e.g., Kevlar, Nomex, moisture barriers).
- Commitment to safety and compliance.
- Proven experience and knowledge of pattern development and sewing equipment.
- Communicating time frames for each project.
- Troubleshooting solutions for the best methods and materials specific to each task.
- Maintaining equipment proficiency-performing regular maintenance and cleaning equipment.
- Organization and storage of all patterns and other equipment.
- Ability to regularly lift, push and pull up to 50lbs.
