SUMMARY Administers basic life support treatment to, and transports, sick or injured persons in the pre-hospital and interfacility setting, as authorized by the State of California, Local EMS Agency Medical Director and Company Medical Director, by performing the following duties, within the prescribed scope of practice and all applicable regulatory guidelines for Prehospital care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Accurately map to a destination.
  • Assists admitting and billing personnel to obtain and record information related to the patient’s vital statistics and to establish the necessity for medical transportation.
  • Comply with all protocols for treatment and transportation of the sick and injured as defined by the Company and County medical control.
  • Determines nature and extent of illness or injury, or magnitude of catastrophe, to establish basic life support procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance, basing decisions on statements of persons involved, examination of victim or victims, and knowledge of emergency medical practice.
  • Maintain a clean, professional appearance while maintaining a courteous, professional, and ethical behavior while working cooperatively with other members of the health care system, co-workers, and the public.
  • Maintains crew’s quarters, vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenishes equipment and supplies. Completes field care report patient billing /trip ticket and daily driver's unit checkout form.
  • Meet and exceed Contractual response times.
  • Operates and drives ambulance with regard to State and company safety policies if qualified by licensure and training and if insurable under company’s driver underwriting guidelines.
  • Participates in continuing education activities as a student, instructor and proctor.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities including chart audits, peer reviews and focused studies.
  • Removes or assists in removal of victims from vehicles, or the scene of an accident or catastrophe, and assists in the transfer of victims to receiving facilities. Assists in controlling crowds, protecting valuables, or performing other duties at scene of an accident or catastrophe.
  • Represents the Company by being courteous, professional, and a patient advocate.
  • Responds to calls in a timely manner based off Company or Government protocols.
  • Responds to instructions from Communications Dispatcher and drives ambulances to specified locations and hospitals. Monitors communication equipment to maintain contact with the dispatcher.
  • Serves as a company representative promoting positive customer relationships through proactive involvement in public business and community activities.
  • Takes and records patient’s vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate. Administers prescribed treatment at the site of an emergency, or in specially equipped vehicles, performing such activities as advanced first aid, immobilization of injuries, application of splints, administration of oxygen, treatment of wounds or abrasions, or administration of basic life support procedures.
  • Use care and respect with all equipment and supplies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
COMPUTER SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ImageTrend EMS Field Bridge Field-ePCR Data Collection Database software; Internet software; eCore - ePro Scheduler EMS Scheduling-Timekeeping Software and Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current California Driver’s License, Current California Ambulance Driver’s Certificate, Current State of California EMT Certificate, Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Provider’s Certificate, Current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DL-51), Current Orange County Ambulance Attendant/Driver License, LA County EMT Scope of Practice Training, ICS Training (levels 100, 200, and 700)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. EMT must have the following abilities: 1. Ability to respond to an alarm, wake and go from a sound sleep to full activity and exertion within a matter of minutes. 2. Ability to complete EMS and emergency rescue functions and tasks, which are physically demanding. 3. Ability to work in high, open places and confined spaces. 4. Ability to conduct activities requiring a moderate to rigorous amount of static pushing, pulling, reaching and lifting (knuckle height and ankle height). 5. Ability to lift 137 lbs. from floor to waist level. 6. Ability to lift 40 lbs. from floor to shoulder level. 7. Ability to lift and carry patient over rough or uneven terrain. 8. Ability to bend, strain, stretch, contort, push, pull, twist, carry, walk with weight, or lift to remove a victim from a motor vehicle and place the victim on a stretcher. 9. Ability to drive an ambulance during both day and night, using depth perception and peripheral vision in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of the posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
Three (3) months of verifiable recent and continuing experience as a practicing California certified EMT is preferred for this position. However, we will accept applications from qualified and properly credentialed EMTs with less experience. Additional preferred qualifications include:
  • Six (6) or more months of experience working as an EMT delivering care in a 9-1-1 service environment
  • Fire Explorer, Auxiliary Firefighter, and/or Fire Cadet experience
  • Having graduated from a CA state approved fire academy.
  • College level coursework in Fire Science
