What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Technician position at Emerge Electrical, Heating and Cooling?
Compensation: $30 - $35 per hour commission
Job Overview
Emerge Electrical, Heating & Cooling is hiring a Service Technician to be the first technician on site for residential service calls across Southwest Washington. This is a diagnostic role with a consultative, opportunity-opening component: you find the true cause of the problem (not just the symptom), document the full scope with clear photos and plain-language notes, perform a complimentary whole-home inspection, and complete small jobs within the booked time. You then report your findings while still on site so a Sales Estimator can be dispatched as needed.
You are the face of Emerge in the customer’s home. Trust is the product — the technician who shows up on time, listens, explains honestly, and builds a genuine relationship is the one who opens the opportunity cleanly for the rest of the team.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Accept dispatched diagnostic appointments in Housecall Pro and update existing Slack channel.
- Arrive on time, present clean and professional, and accurately diagnose.
- Perform a thorough diagnostic for the reported issue — confirm the symptom, then find the underlying cause.
- Perform a complimentary whole-home electrical inspection on every electrical appointment (or the HVAC equivalent).
- Capture scope, system condition, risks, options, decision-makers, and any budget/timeline signals.
- Update the job’s Slack channel.
- Take clear, well-lit photos and write notes any teammate could follow.
- Report findings while still on site.
- Move the job through the Housecall Pro dispatch steps.
- Complete approved small jobs within the booked time and collect full payment.
- Forward larger or discovered work to the Operations Manager for Estimator scheduling.
- Build genuine client relationships and leave the customer confident in Emerge and clear on what happens next.
Required Qualifications
- Washington State electrical certification appropriate to the work (journeyman-level or senior apprentice with supervision).
- Proven diagnostic skill in residential electrical and/or HVAC systems.
- Strong communication: able to explain technical issues in plain language a homeowner can repeat.
- Comfort with mobile field software (Housecall Pro or similar) and team messaging (Slack).
- Valid Washington driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screen per company policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a residential service / sales environment with documented diagnostics.
- Familiarity with good / better / best scoping and consultative customer interaction.
- Knowledge of the Southwest Washington market and local housing stock (older homes, panels, knob-and-tube).
- For HVAC work: EPA certification and low-voltage certification are required to perform any small jobs immediately on site rather than forwarding them to the CSR and/or Sales Estimator.
