Job Description: Caregiver
Reports Directly to: Administrator

Description of position:
Provides direct personal care and supervision to the clients at the facility. The staffing pattern for this department is primary care. Promotes resident well being and satisfaction through support with activities of daily living. Communicates with other staff to ensure resident needs are meet.

Staffing Pattern:
The resident care services department at this assisted living facility staffs through a primary care structure. Each caregiver will be in charge of all of the personal care duties of their resident assignment.

Qualifications for the position:
The caregiver shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age and have a criminal clearance prior to presence in the facility. The caregiver will also have passed a physical and have a chest xray or intradermal test performed by a physician within the prior six (6) months of employment. The physician report shall indicate whether the person is physically qualified to perform the duties to be assigned, and whether he/she has any health condition that would create a hazard to himself/herself, other staff members or residents. Personnel with evidence of physical illness or emotional instability that poses a significant threat to the wellbeing of residents will be relieved of their duties.

In order to carry out the responsibilities of this position the individual is required to have training or will go through training of caregiving, preferably in the geriatric realm. Basic First Aid certification is required. Physical ability to perform the duties, including the ability to assist with mobility and resident transfers is essential. Good mental health is required. The individual must possess the capability to read, understand and carry out care plans and physical orders.

  • All caregivers shall have a criminal clearance prior to presence in the facility.
  • All caregivers will have TB test clearance and health screening within 7 days of employment.
  • The criminal record clearance will be cleared by both DOJ and FBI.

Responsibilities of the Daytime and PM Caregiver:
1. Assists with activities of daily living, including assisting residents with taking their centrally stores medications. Following the facility protocol, licensing regulations and guidelines for both resident and employee safety.

2. Follows safety guidelines in the facility, including proper lifting techniques and universal precautions when providing care to the residents.

3. Follows the schedule of duties for the caregiver, as well as the individual plan of care for each resident including scheduled activities.

4. Function as a team, assisting coworkers as the need arises.
5. Monitor resident activity, food intake, functional status, psychosocial status, taking action as required to promote resident well being.
6. Reports status change immediately to the supervisor.
7. Acts immediately on any resident crisis, following protocol and basic first aid training.
8. In the event all assigned duties cannot be completed, ask for assistance and report to the administrator.
9. Any other assignments made by your direct supervisor or administrator.
10. Prepare meals for the residents.
11. Promote open communication between healthcare professionals, families, and staff.
12. Do all laundry and housekeeping services for the residents and the facility that is required.

Responsibilities of the Overnight Caregiver:

  • This is an awake position*

1. Assists with activities of daily living, including assisting residents with taking their centrally stored medications if any are taken at night. Following the facility protocol, licensing regulations and guidelines for both resident and employee safety.

2. Follows safety guidelines in the facility, including proper lifting techniques and universal precautions when providing care to the residents.

3. Follows the nighttime schedule of duties for the caregiver, as well as the individual plan of care for each resident including scheduled activities.

4. Function as a team, assisting coworkers as the need arises.
5. Monitor resident activity, food intake, functional status, psychosocial status, taking action as required to promote resident well being. (This is if a resident is up at night)
6. Reports status change immediately to the supervisor.
7. Acts immediately on any resident crisis, following protocol and basic first aid training.
8. In the event all assigned duties cannot be completed, ask for assistance and report to the administrator.
9. Any other assignments made by your direct supervisor or administrator.
10. Helps with the preparation of breakfast meals for the residents.
11. Promote open communication between healthcare professionals, families, and staff.
12. Provide observation and supervision of the residents and reports any unusual incidents to the administration.

Daytime Caregiver Duties:
1. Verify resident status changes with the previous shift. Read documentation.
2. Check schedule for resident physician or other scheduled appointments
3. Designated resident baths.
4. Assists with resident grooming which was not completed by the night shift:

a. Bathing (on designated days)
b. Incontinent care
c. Clothing selection
d. Dressing
e. Oral care
f. Shave g. Make-up h. Hair care
5. Help with breakfast and clean up.
6. Make beds.
7. Tidy rooms/housekeeping duties as assigned.
8. Pass AM snacks
9. Residents to activities
10. Help with lunch assisting residents to dining room and the cleanup.
11. Assists with self administration of meds.
12. Pass afternoon snacks.
13. Documents status change/incidents per protocol.
14. Report off to next shift

PM Caregiver Duties:
1. Verify resident status changes with previous shift. Check documentation.
2. Housekeeping duties as assigned.
3. Assists with self administration of meds.
4. Assists residents to dining room at 4:45PM.
5. Help with preparing, serving, and cleanup of dinner.
6. Residents to PM activities.
7. Assists residents as needed with evening care.
a. Oral care
b. Dentures in labeled cup
c. Assists into night cloths
d. Toileting
e. Remove soiled clothing and put in hamper
f. Incontinet care
g. Remove assistive devices (hearing aids, tec.)
h. Pathway clear to the bathroom i. Room at a comfortable temperature
j. Extra blankets, etc.
k. Safety check

8. Check lighting.
9. Outside doors secured (From outside only).
10. Document status change/incidents per protocol.
11. Report off to next shift.

Night time Caregiver Duties:
1. Verify resident status changes with previous shift. Check documentation.
2. Housekeeping duties as assigned.
3. Assists with designated early morning baths.
4. Assists as needed with grooming. Resident AM grooming (assist only as required)
a. Bathing (on designated days)
b. Incontinent care
c. Clothing selection
d. Dressing
e. Oral care
f. Shave
g. Make-up
h. Hair care
5. Bring residents to dining room as needed for breakfast.
6. Assist with self administration of meds.
7. Be able to respond to residents if they need help during the night.
8. Help residents in the morning when they are ready to get up and start the day.
9. Other duties as assigned.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $15.50 per hour

Expected hours: 16 – 28 per week
