What are the responsibilities and job description for the Survey Instrument Operator position at EMC Engineering Services Inc?
The SURVEY INSTRUMENT OPERATOR is a position to assist in surveying land by performing tasks as directed by Survey Party Chief or other senior survey staff.
- Holds level or stadia rod at designated points to assist in determining elevations and position of stakes for mapmaking, construction, land, and other surveys.
- Calls out readings or records readings, as directed.
- Marks points of measurement with elevation, station number, or identifying mark.
- Measures distance between survey points with steel or cloth tape or surveyor’s chain.
- Marks measuring points with keel, paint sticks, scratches, tacks, or stakes.
- Places stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation.
- Cuts and clears brush and trees from line of survey.
- Sets up equipment in a timely manner.
- Accurately operates various types of field survey equipment including transit, total station, data collectors, automatic levels.
- Maintains survey equipment by keeping it clean and in a stable environment.
- Responsible for ensuring adequate survey-related supplies in vehicle including wood, paint, tacks, flags, and drinking water.
- Assists in training entry-level staff.
- May, from time to time, act as a Party Chief.
- Must be able to read technical manuals and instructions related to job duties.
- Ability to locate and recognize pertinent information contained on maps, plans, aerial photography and deeds.
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Equivalent combination of 2 years of education and relevant experience preferred.
- GPS and robotic experience preferred.
- Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
- Valid driver’s license required; must have satisfactory driving record in accordance with EMC fleet insurance requirements.
- Must be able to pass a background check as required by military, industrial, port, and other client sites.
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices

- May be required to drive long distances daily
- May be required to travel overnight
