Director of Accounting | Sequoia backed Series B AI

Ember Search has been retained on a Director of Accounting search for a Series B, AI-powered risk management platform for modern businesses. Backed by Sequoia and Khosla Ventures, the company serves 1,000 businesses and is on track for approximately $25M in ARR this year, with plans to more than double in 2027.

The company pairs a proprietary AI platform with an in-house team of risk advisors, claims experts and attorneys, and charges clients a transparent flat fee instead of commissions. Placing a client’s coverage is the entry point, and from there the platform expands into broader risk management, with customers already asking the company to build custom risk tools for their businesses. It is now expanding into new industries, new offices and new lines of business, including health and benefits and its own premium finance business.

The Role

As the company’s first dedicated accounting hire, you will build the accounting function from the ground up, partnering directly with the Head of Finance as their number two.

You will:

• Build policy-level revenue accounting under ASC 606, including performance obligations, variable fees and refund exposure
• Design the accounting for the client and partner funds the company collects and holds
• Map existing workflows and design the accounting systems behind them, with an automation-first approach
• Move the corporate books from cash to accrual and own the monthly close
• Build the policies, controls and documentation to get the company audit ready by 2027
• Own multi-state tax compliance and support accounting for new lines of business

This is a hands-on build role at a company where the accounting system directly enables its next major revenue line.

Candidate Profile

• 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including time in-house at a high-growth company
• Experience at a high-growth tech, software or fintech company
• Strong understanding of ASC 606 and applying it to complex, variable or multi-stream revenue
• Track record of building accounting processes, controls or systems from scratch
• Experience owning a month-end close and preparing a company for audit
• An automation-first mindset, with experience eliminating manual work through better systems or AI tools
• Comfort operating hands-on in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment
