Hardware Design Engineer - Board Design & Test

Embedded Design Engineering
Chaska, MN Full Time
POSTED ON 10/30/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/28/2026

About EDE
EDE is an engineering design services firm. Clients bring us their electronics problems, and we design the hardware, from first schematic to tested boards. Because we work across many clients, you’ll work on a range of products: embedded systems, power electronics, industrial controls and test systems, not one product line for years.

We’re also growing into regulated industries. Our quality system is aligned with ISO 13485 and AS9100, and we’re starting to take on medical and aerospace work. It’s a good time to join and help shape how we do it.

The Role
This is a hands-on entry-level role where you’ll learn how real hardware works and fails. You’ll design the boards and fixtures that test the products we design, bring up new hardware, and write Python code that automates testing. You’ll work alongside experienced hardware and firmware engineers who will review your work and help you grow into product design.

What You’ll Do

  • Do schematic capture and PCB layout in Altium Designer for test fixture boards, interface boards and adapters
  • Design and build bed-of-nails and custom functional test fixtures
  • Bring up and debug product boards and test fixtures with standard lab equipment
  • Write and modify Python test scripts that drive instruments and automate functional tests
  • Run functional tests, analyze results and document findings
  • Investigate failures and help find root causes
  • Maintain and improve existing test systems
  • Support prototype builds and the move into production

What You Need

  • BSEE (recent or upcoming graduates welcome) or equivalent practical experience
  • 0–2 years of experience; internships, co-ops and project work count
  • PCB design experience in Altium, KiCad, OrCAD or similar (school or personal projects count)
  • Comfortable with a scope, DMM, power supply and soldering iron
  • Basic Python programming
  • Within commuting distance of Chaska and able to be onsite 2–3 days a week

Nice to Have

  • Altium Designer specifically
  • Instrument control (PyVISA, SCPI) or test automation
  • Hardware projects you can show us: a senior design project, a personal build or a co-op project
  • Engineering student group participation (e.g., IEEE, robotics, Formula SAE, solar vehicle or similar teams)
  • Mechanical aptitude for fixture building

Why EDE

  • Learn fast: design, test and debug across many products and technologies
  • Real design work: the boards you design go into real use on client projects
  • Mentorship: close work with experienced hardware and firmware engineers
  • Growth path: a clear route into product hardware design
