Position Summary
The Quality Systems & Test/Controls Engineer is responsible for administering and continuously improving the company's ISO 9001 Quality Management System while providing technical leadership for electrical test equipment, automated test system development, and motor performance testing. This role is responsible for ensuring processes, methods, and quality systems comply with applicable customer, regulatory, and compliance (ISO, IEC, UL, etc.) requirements.
In addition to leading the Quality Management System, the position maintains and modernizes electrical test equipment (from a broad range of vintages), develops automated production test systems with comprehensive data retention and traceability, and establishes compliant dynamometer testing for electric motors ranging from 0.25 kW to 25 kW.
Quality Management System Administration (Primary Responsibility)
- Serve as the administrator of the company's ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
- Manage/maintain the Quality Manual, quality procedures, work instructions, forms, and controlled documentation.
- Coordinate internal audits and support registrar, customer, and supplier reviews.
- Lead corrective and preventive action (CAPA), including supplier corrective action (SCAR) investigations and verify implementation effectiveness.
- Facilitate root cause analysis using structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Monitor QMS objectives, KPIs, and management review metrics.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and other applicable international standard requirements and applicable customer, regulatory, IEC, and UL standards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout manufacturing and engineering.
- Train employees on quality system requirements and quality procedures.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Corporate Management to improve quality and process effectiveness.
- Maintain gage calibration and coordinate with calibration suppliers to assure all measurement equipment remains within calibration.
Test Equipment Engineering & Automation
- Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and improve electrical test equipment used in motor, electronics, and fluid power manufacturing.
- Design, develop, and commission automated production and engineering test equipment.
- Develop automation software (PC, PLC, HMI, etc.).
- Design electrical control systems and test fixtures for manufacturing.
- Integrate instrumentation including torque, speed, power analyzers, temperature, vibration, HiPot, insulation resistance, and encoder/resolver alignment and verification.
- Develop secure automated data acquisition systems with long-term electronic data retention and production traceability.
- Improve equipment reliability, maintainability, and manufacturing throughput.
- Maintain electrical schematics, software revisions, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
Motor Testing & Standards
- Develop and maintain IEC and UL compliant dynamometer testing for electric motors from 0.25 kW through 25 kW.
- Develop test procedures for production qualification, engineering validation, efficiency, thermal, endurance, and performance testing.
- Validate new testing methodologies and correlate results with applicable standards.
- Maintain calibration systems for dynamometers and production test equipment.
- Analyze motor performance data and support Engineering with technical recommendations.
Qualifications - Required
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering, or related technical field.
- Minimum five years of experience in manufacturing, quality systems, industrial controls, or automated test engineering.
- Experience administering an ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
- Experience conducting internal audits and managing corrective actions.
- Experience with PLC programming and industrial automation.
- Experience troubleshooting industrial electrical equipment.
- Strong understanding of electrical measurement and data acquisition systems.
- Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
Qualifications - Preferred
- Experience in electric motor manufacturing or rotating equipment.
- Knowledge of IEC and UL motor standards.
- Experience developing automated dynamometer test systems.
- Certified ISO 9001 Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Experience with SQL databases, automated reporting, or industrial data historians.
- Experience with LabVIEW, Python, C#, or equivalent software tools.
