Position Summary

The Assistant Principal serves as a collaborative instructional leader responsible for supporting the academic, behavioral, operational, and cultural success of Elwood Jr./Sr. High School. Working closely with the principal, teachers, students, families, and community partners, the assistant principal helps foster a safe, supportive, and academically rigorous learning environment where every student is prepared for success after graduation.

This position emphasizes instructional leadership, student achievement, positive school culture, attendance improvement, and operational excellence while promoting the mission and values of Elwood Community School Corporation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Instructional Leadership

  • Support implementation of district instructional initiatives.
  • Conduct teacher observations and evaluations in accordance with Indiana law and district procedures.
  • Provide meaningful coaching and feedback to improve instructional practices.
  • Assist with professional learning opportunities.
  • Monitor curriculum implementation and student achievement data.
  • Promote effective instructional strategies for diverse learners.

Student Achievement

  • Monitor academic progress and intervention programs.
  • Coordinate MTSS/RTI implementation.
  • Support implementation of graduation pathways.
  • Assist counselors with student scheduling and academic planning.
  • Analyze attendance, discipline, and achievement data to improve student outcomes.

Student Discipline and School Climate

  • Administer the student discipline program in a fair, consistent, and restorative manner.
  • Investigate student incidents.
  • Work collaboratively with families to resolve behavioral concerns.
  • Develop proactive systems that promote positive behavior and student accountability.
  • Coordinate restorative practices and student support interventions.
  • Maintain accurate discipline documentation.

Attendance

  • Monitor daily attendance.
  • Coordinate attendance interventions.
  • Work with families and community agencies regarding chronic absenteeism.
  • Ensure compliance with Indiana compulsory attendance laws.

School Safety

  • Assist in implementing the district safety plan.
  • Coordinate emergency drills.
  • Serve on the school safety committee.
  • Assist with crisis response and emergency management.
  • Promote a secure learning environment.

Operations

  • Assist with supervision of arrival, dismissal, lunch, hallways, extracurricular activities, and athletic events.
  • Develop supervision schedules.
  • Assist with master schedule development.
  • Coordinate standardized testing logistics.
  • Oversee student lockers, parking, and building procedures.
  • Support textbook and technology management.

Student Services

  • Participate in Case Conference Committees as appropriate.
  • Support implementation of Section 504 plans.
  • Collaborate with special education staff.
  • Work with social workers, counselors, and community mental health providers.
  • Promote student wellness initiatives.

Staff Leadership

  • Build positive relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Foster a collaborative school culture.
  • Assist with onboarding and mentoring new teachers.
  • Encourage professional growth.
  • Promote effective communication among departments.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Develop positive relationships with parents and guardians.
  • Communicate regularly regarding student progress and school initiatives.
  • Represent the school at community events.
  • Strengthen partnerships with businesses, colleges, and community organizations.

Other Responsibilities

  • Serve as acting principal in the principal's absence.
  • Attend school board meetings as requested.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.


Qualifications


Required

  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or related field
  • Valid Indiana Building Level Administrator License
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indiana academic standards
  • Knowledge of Indiana education law and school operations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred

  • Previous administrative experience
  • Experience using student achievement data to improve instruction
  • Experience leading school improvement initiatives
  • Knowledge of restorative discipline practices
  • Experience working in rural schools
