ELOS Environmental, LLC (ELOS) is looking to add a motivated Great Plains Archaeologist to the team. A proven technical background in cultural resources, data collection, and documentation is required. This position involves providing cultural resources project support for planning, engineering, and construction services to government, military, and commercial clients throughout the United States. As an ELOS Archaeologist you will have the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act (NAGPRA), and state regulations. All work will be conducted alongside senior staff. The candidate will collaborate with other staff members on all aspects of cultural resources projects, including but not limited to: proposals; background research; fieldwork (Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III mitigation); preparing NEPA and NHPA technical reports; Due Diligence Reports; coordinating consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO), Native American Tribes, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and multiple other federal, state, and local agencies; evaluating properties and sites for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), preparing determinations of NRHP eligibility, and completing state survey forms. The applicant must be organized, be capable of performing physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions, have experience in preparing various types of resource reports, and will be required to travel locally with the potential for out-of-state travel as well. This job will require approximately 50% fieldwork to collect data and 50% office work to process data, write reports, and work with the project manager to complete other required tasks.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Coordinate compliance with NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, state regulations, and other laws relating to cultural resources.
  • Conduct archival research and background records reviews.
  • Conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (Phase I-III) and monitoring.
  • Conduct analyses and prepare and edit technical reports for cultural resource projects.
  • Provide support and work with senior-level cultural resource and environmental staff.
  • Lead field crews on archaeological investigations.
  • Assist with the management of project budgets, additional staff members assigned to projects, and additional staff member duties.
  • Prepare and create technical, high-quality scientific reports, site forms, and research within a project’s scope with little supervisory oversight.
  • Assist with the management of cultural resources projects, including fieldwork, research, and report writing.
  • Ability to work out of state for extended periods of time.
Qualifications:

Education/Requirement:

  • Formal education resulting in a graduate degree in the appropriate discipline (i.e. Anthropology, Archaeology, History, etc). However, a formal education resulting in a bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline plus at least 24 months of professionally supervised experience may also be acceptable.
  • Minimum of 16 months of professional cultural resource management experience. This experience must include at least 4 months of experience with Great Plains cultural resource projects or in similar cultural contexts.
  • Must have been previously listed on a variety of federal and state permits in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and/or South Dakota and can demonstrate a strong understanding of Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Must possess experience in the northern Great Basin, Plateau, and/or northwestern Great Plains cultural areas and the ability to be permitted as a Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Experience with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) projects, state review processes in the North-Central region, and tribal coordination support is strongly preferred.
  • Competence in theory and methods, and in recording, collecting, handling, analyzing, evaluating, and reporting cultural property data.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, equip, staff, organize, and supervise cultural resource investigations of various levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, as evidenced by the timely completion of thesis, research reports, and similar documents.
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) status or eligible for RPA status
  • Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NEPA, NHPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA, is a bonus.
  • Experience using GPS technology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience recording archaeological sites on site forms required by various state agencies.
  • Must be capable of walking for long periods of time over unfamiliar terrain, excavating shovel tests and test units, screening soil, and carrying field equipment.
  • Excellent communication, editing, technical writing, and English grammar skills.
