Position Summary

The Counselor provides effective, evidence-based, and culturally responsive mental health services to support the emotional health and general well-being of Elon students. The Counselor functions as a generalist to provide direct clinical services (i.e., initial clinical assessments, individual and group counseling, crisis support) addressing a range of mental health concerns within the counseling center's scope of clinical care. Additionally, the Counselor is responsible for providing consultation, outreach and education activities, and care coordination support. This is a full-time, 10-month, one-year position.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Master's degree in clinical counseling, clinical psychology, clinical social work, or related field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience providing mental health services in higher education setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work as a generalist within a brief therapy/solution-focused treatment modality to address a range of mental health issues through evidence-based approaches
  • Familiarity with DSM 5-TR and experienced in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a range of mental health concerns
  • Experienced with effectively managing high risk and complex clinical presentations
  • Experience providing culturally responsive and affirming care to a diverse student population
  • Experience and comfort utilizing common software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; and ability to utilize electronic medical record system (Titanium)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience building partnerships and relating effectively with a diverse range of constituents and stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Commitment to divisional and university priorities for mentoring, leadership and skill development, inclusive excellence, wellness and well-being, vibrant residential campus experience, civic engagement, and continuous improvement and operational excellence

Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing

Independently licensed in NC as a mental health professional (i.e., LCMHC, LMFT, LCSW, or Licensed Psychologist); or license eligible in NC and able to obtain full NC license within six months of start date (please consult with hiring manager if you have questions).

Job Duties

  • Clinical Services and Outreach Provides direct psychological services to university students within a brief therapy model to include, clinical assessments, individual/group/couples counseling, and skill-based training workshops. Provides crisis response through interventions and/or consultations to students, families, and campus partners. Develops and presents educational programs and workshops related to college student mental health. Provides consultation services to university colleagues, students, and community partners. Serves as back-up crisis consultant by phone as periodically requested by crisis response agency (ProtoCall) or in person to manage crises impacting campus community, including nights and weekends. Maintains accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with legal, ethical, and profession guidelines and Counseling Services policies using the electronic medical record software system (Titanium). Enhances professional and clinical skills through participation in continuing education opportunities. Adheres to all legal and ethical standards of professional practice.
  • General Participates in departmental staff meetings and clinical consultation meetings. Serves on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees. Support university events, including, but not limited to: Convocations, Commencement, Family Weekend, and events related to Admissions and/or New Student Orientation. Performs other related duties as assigned by director in support of the mission, vision, and goals of the department and the University.
