Junior Associate Attorney - Criminal Defense

Ellison Law LLC is seeking a self-motivated, passionate criminal defense attorney looking to work in a technologically advanced and flexible work environment. Our firm is founded on the principles of compassionate, honest, and relentless legal representation for people accused of criminal offenses and motor vehicle offenses. The successful candidate will provide essential support to our experienced attorneys while advancing our commitment to client-centered representation. 

This role is ideally suited for a recent law school graduate or a newly admitted member of the bar who desires a flexible professional schedule and the opportunity to develop their expertise within a passionate legal team. We are looking for an individual committed to establishing a long-term career in criminal defense litigation.

Ellison Law LLC is a private criminal defense firm representing clients in matters ranging from misdemeanor offenses to serious felony charges throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts. We distinguish ourselves by providing premium legal advocacy rooted in respect, compassion, and integrity. In addition to our core criminal practice, we handle motor vehicle infractions before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal and some District Courts in Massachusetts, as well as license suspension appeals and administrative hearings before the DMV in Rhode Island and RMV in Massachusetts. • Provide legal representation for clients in a diverse array of criminal matters. 
• Represent clients on traffic tickets at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal.
• Represent clients at driver’s license suspension hearings and appeals with the Rhode Island DMV and Massachusetts RMV.
• Perform intakes with potential new clients and complete the signup process. 
• Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft memoranda, motions, and pleadings for various court proceedings.
• Maintain client confidentiality and adhere to the legal profession’s ethical standards.
• Prepare for, attend, and present arguments at court hearings, arraignments, pre-trial conferences, trials etc.
• Maintain and organize electronic client files to ensure data integrity and accessibility.
• Prepare for and represent clients at trial, including as second chair to experienced attorneys. 
• Develop strategic legal defenses and conduct case investigations.
• Maintain consistent and professional communication with clients regarding the status of their legal matters.
• Collaborate with team members, including our other lawyers, on Zoom and in person. 
• Meet Key Performance Indicators as set by the firm. 

Salary ranging from $70,000 to $90,000 based on criminal defense experience.

This position is remote. Our physical office is located in Providence, RI. Our office has a remote-first mentality. The physical office can be used for in-person meetings with clients and team members. 

• Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
• 0-2 years of criminal defense experience. 
• Active license to practice law in Rhode Island or Massachusetts (both preferred) or a plan to take the bar exam. 
• A demonstrated passion for criminal defense through experience.
• Must be in good standing with the state bar association, if admitted to the bar. 
• Strong written and oral communication skills with experience being in a courtroom. 
• Ability to manage a caseload and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Familiarity with criminal court procedures and rules of evidence.
• Must be able to show compassion to clients and understanding of their situation in order to provide exceptional customer service.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Bilingual in Spanish is desirable but not required.
