POSITION: Certified K-12 Orchestra Teacher .80 FTE
LOCATION: Ellensburg School District
REPORTS TO: Building Principals
Purpose
The job of a K-12 Orchestra Teacher is done for the purpose of facilitating student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing District approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
Responsibilities
- Teach and develop a comprehensive string/orchestra curriculum for students in grades K–12
- Instruct students individually and in groups on stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass)
- Plan and conduct performances, concerts, and other musical events
Assess and monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback - Collaborate with school staff, music department colleagues, and parents
- Maintain and care for instruments and classroom materials
- Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances
- Evaluates each student’s musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to contribute
- Attends or participates in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the district and/or building principal
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- BA in Music or Music Education, Master’s degree preferred
- Academic preparation for or experience in serving students K-12th grade.
Licenses/Special Requirements:
- Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in instrumental music.
- Possess a valid Driver's License and ability to travel between school sites.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Subject areas appropriate to assignment; effective behavior management techniques; effective instructional techniques; rules and procedures for student safety.
Skilled in:
Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications; effective communication with parents or guardians; designing and implementing lesson plans for students having a wide range of achievement.
Ability to:
Deal with students in a positive and confident manner; be fair and consistent when working with a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population; adapt to change and remain flexible; organize activities; manage student behavior; use good judgement to maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques; use necessary computers or software; establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with students, parents or guardians, staff and administrators.
Working Environment
Generally, the job requires 0% sitting, 40% walking, and 60% standing. The job is performed under some temperature variations and minimal hazardous conditions.
