The Ellen O'Brien Gaiser Addiction Center is a nonprofit addiction treatment organization that has been serving individuals and families affected by substance use disorders since 1971. As the region's longest-running addiction treatment program and a Pennsylvania Center of Excellence for opioid use disorder treatment, Gaiser Center provides compassionate, evidence-based care through inpatient and outpatient services. Our holistic, trauma-informed approach addresses the physical, emotional, mental, and social aspects of recovery while supporting clients and their families throughout the healing process.
Position Summary/Objective:
The Cook is responsible for all kitchen functions, including, but not limited to, food purchasing, receiving, preparation, and maintaining quality standards, safety, sanitation, and cleanliness.
Schedule:
- Part-Time: 3-8 hour days, 24hrs a week
- Required Availability: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm
- Hourly Rate: $18.50
Organization Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Promote and follow safe working practices and take necessary steps to prevent injuries.
- Comply with confidentiality policies and procedures including but not limited to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, conferences, staff development trainings, etc.
Position Responsibilities:
- Prepares and/or oversees the preparation of all food served at the Gaiser Center.
- Prepare client meals using portion control servings.
- Prepares and cooks special modified diets when necessary, according to instructions from the nurse.
- Works with the Gaiser nurse to ensure that client nutritional needs are being met and to monitor any known allergies.
- Maintains recipe files and records.
- Maintains accurate records for safety and sanitation relative to food service.
- Maintains all kitchen equipment to ensure cleanliness and reports all operating issues to Kitchen Manager.
- Assist in the preparation of special menu items for special meetings, meals, banquet, and activity projects.
- Monitors the taking of refrigerator/freezer temperatures.

Sanitation:
- Washes and cleans all cooking utensils, pots, pans, and equipment used in food preparation.
- Cleans and disinfects all work surfaces and work areas (counter tops, sink, stove).
- Cleans out all refrigerators on regular basis.
Qualifications:
- At least 6 months' experience in a similar capacity.
- Commitment to the mission, vision and values of the Gaiser Center.
- Possess strong organizational and decision-making skills.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Knowledge of menu planning.
- Ability to maintain a food service inventory.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced and high-pressure work environment.
- Demonstrate the ability to accept responsibility and act independently of direct supervision.
- Experience in quantity or commercial food preparation.
- Must have knowledge and skill to meet all applicable standards for food preparation.
- Possess and exhibit high standards of personal cleanliness and hygiene (wear clean white apron; wear hairnet/caps – supplied by employer).
- Knowledge of applicable sanitation and health codes.
- Must be able to work with other staff, supervisors, and suppliers.
Profile/Other Competencies:
- Satisfactory criminal background check and pre-employment drug test required.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver's license required.
Working Conditions:
Be able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 50 pounds. Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Responsibilities, skills and working conditions may change as needs evolve. Extended hours may be required to meet the needs of the clients.
