SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Bookmobile Driver operates a large, high-profile diesel bookmobile across long distances and varied rural, community, and institutional routes to provide library services and circulate materials at scheduled stops. The position ensures safe vehicle operation, supports efficient outreach service delivery, and serves as a public-facing representative of the library at all bookmobile locations.

MYBRARY BRAND AND COMMUNITY REPRESENTATION
All library employees serve as ambassadors for Mybrary, the Elko-Eureka County Library System. Staff are expected to understand, support, and communicate the library’s brand identity, mission, and values in all interactions. Employees should actively advocate for library services, uphold the Mybrary ideals of exploration, discovery, and connection, and positively represent the library in the community, both inside and outside the workplace.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:
  • Drives a large, high-profile diesel bookmobile long distances across rural, institutional, and community routes in varying weather and road conditions.
  • Performs basic safety and readiness checks, including fueling, checking fluid levels, monitoring tire pressure, and reporting mechanical concerns to the Assistant Library Director.
  • Operates and maintains the bookmobile generator during field operations, including starting, stopping, and monitoring performance.
  • Works with approved vendors to schedule and coordinate maintenance and repair services for the bookmobile. 
  • Provides courteous and inclusive customer service to patrons of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, including school classes, seniors, families, and individuals in institutional or restricted environments. 
  • Checks out materials, issues and distributes library cards, collects payments, and assists patrons with locating materials or placing holds and requests. 
  • Works with teachers and school staff to coordinate classroom visits, manage class flow, promote library services, and support literacy programs. 
  • Maintains an efficient pace at high-volume school and community stops; communicates clearly with patrons regarding time limits and schedule requirements to ensure on-time arrival at subsequent stops. 
  • Loads, unloads, and organizes book bins, library materials, displays, and supplies for bookmobile routes and outreach stops.
  •  Rotates and refreshes bookmobile materials to maintain an appealing and relevant collection; documents patron requests and communicates collection needs to appropriate staff. 
  • Cleans, restocks, and performs light repairs on library materials and equipment as needed.
  •  Maintains the interior and exterior cleanliness of the bookmobile, including basic tidying, trash removal, and minor touch-up tasks.
  •  Assists with basic maintenance and upkeep of library facilities, vehicles, and grounds, including cleaning, organizing, small repairs, painting, and simple building or furniture assembly tasks. 
  • Works with the Library Clerk to follow established route schedules, coordinate card processing, and support efficient delivery of services at all stops. 
  • Collects and records required operational data including mileage, fuel usage, generator logs, and usage statistics. 
  • Communicates route conditions, patron needs, service issues, and significant developments to the Assistant Library Director in a timely manner.
  •  Assists with off-site programs, community events, and literacy initiatives, including set-up, coordination, and basic program support.
  •  May represent the library at community activities such as parades, fairs, and public events as scheduled. 
  • May assist other library departments or branch locations with circulation, basic maintenance, or outreach support as assigned. 
  • Represents the library and the County with professionalism, dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation

OTHER REQUIREMENTS 

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening pursuant to county policy.
  • Must be able to stay overnight on long-distance stops (typically1-2 times a month).
  • Must be available during library operation hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adjust to scheduling needs.
  • Must maintain patron confidentiality and advocate for patron privacy.
  • Must be comfortable engaging with patrons of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, including school children, seniors, families, and individuals in institutional or restricted environments, in an inclusive and respectful manner.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to intellectual freedom and provide access to library materials and resources for all patrons, regardless of personal beliefs. Staff are expected to assist patrons in finding information without judgment or censorship. 
  • May be temporarily assigned to other departments or branch locations to support operations or training needs.

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)

An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:
Knowledge 
  • Knowledge of the rural and remote areas served, including community, school, and institutional locations.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of large, high-profile vehicles, including use of mirrors, backup cameras, and other safety features.
  • Basicknowledgeofdiesel engines, routine vehicle checks, and general vehicle safety practices.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools and simple repair tasks, including cleaning, touch-up painting, and light furniture assembly.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and databases.

  • Demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills with patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Communicating e?ectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Managing time, maintaining punctuality, and prioritizing multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced outreach environment.

 • Ability to manage multiple deadlines, competing priorities, and time-sensitive schedules during outreach operations.
 • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, schools, community partners, and the public.
 • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold patron privacy in all interactions.
 • Ability to adapt to new tools, technologies, procedures, and service models as library services evolve.
 • Ability to identify and solve practical problems, including field-based challenges where only limited standardization or assistance exists.An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
  • Work is performed inside the public library, inside the bookmobile, and outdoors at community stops, schools, senior centers, and partner locations.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to ?nger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, climbsteps, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may also be required to stand or walk for extended periods while providing outreach services.
  • Theemployeemustoccasionallyliftandmoveupto45 pounds, and must be able to push, pull, or maneuver wheeled carts or supply bins of up to 100 pounds.

  • Noise levels vary from moderate in the office to moderate-to-loud when the bookmobile engine or generator is running at outreach stops. 
  • Frequentinterruptionstoplannedworkactivitiesshouldbe expected.
  • Indoor environments are generally clean with limited exposure to dust, fumes, or odors.  Outdoor work may involve exposure to weather, uneven surfaces, and airborne particles.
  • Incumbent will regularly operate the bookmobile and travel to remote or rural areas in a wide range of weather conditions.
TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY
An employee in this position is expected to operate, learn, and adapt to the following tools and technologies:
  • Standard office and library equipment, including computers, printers, scanners, telephones, calculators, copiers, and cash drawers.
  • Library systems and software (e.g., Koha ILS, EnvisionWare, or similar applications).
  • Vehicle-related tools and equipment such as fuel pumps, dashboard diagnostic indicators, tire gauges, or other basic maintenance tools used for routine checks (e.g., fluid levels, air pressure).
  • Outreach-related technology such as tablets, laptops, portable printers, card-registration devices, or program materials.
  • Additional technology or devices used during programs, such as projectors, gaming systems, STEM kits, or other department-specific tools.
  • New or emerging technologies adopted by the library as services expand. Employees are expected to remain flexible and proactive in learning new tools.
