SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician working for Elko County and stationed in the Unincorporated Town of Jackpot.

Receives supervision and direction from the Fire Chief. May also receive direction from other department officers on an incident scene. This firefighter will direct other firefighters on an emergency scene and in chores around the station.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:

  • Respond to fire and medical calls.
  • Respond to auto extrication and other rescue calls.
  • Respond to public service calls and other emergency calls.
  • Attend weekly training sessions.
  • Clean apparatus and perform minor maintenance.
  • Perform maintenance checks on vehicles.
  • Maintain fire department tools and equipment.
  • Clean and maintain the station.
  • Do annual service test on fire department equipment.
  • Do public fire safety inspections.
  • Complete reports both in writing and on the computer.
  • Comply with all Elko County Policies and department procedures.
  • Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to essential functions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • This position has been identified as safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening pursuant to county policy.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of career firefighting or 6 years as a volunteer
  • Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license

An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

Knowledge

  • Meet Fire Fighter I qualifications for structure firefighting as defined by NFPA 1001
  • Meet Wildland Fire Fighter II qualifications for structure firefighting as defined by WFWG
  • EMT Intermediate Certification with the State of Nevada

Skills 

  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Abilities

  • Ability to pass a physical agility examination, Wildland arduous pack tests (45 lb. pack 3 miles in 45 minutes)
  • Ability to pass an annual physical examination
  • Ability to respond to emergency calls and act in a professional and calm manner
  • Deal courteously with the public
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week and be on call other days of the week
  • Ability to perform maintenance as described
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to drive and operate various types of vehicles

An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings. Outdoor work is required in firefighting situations, as well as the maintenance of equipment. 
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate vehicles and various pieces of tools and equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk or hear; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand or walk.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to work in firefighter turnouts and SCBA for up to two hours. While in this protective clothing be able to crawl and walk while dragging a hose or carrying equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • While in Wildland protective clothing, be able to work up to eight hours in 100-degree plus heat, while at times performing strenuous duties.
  • Have the strength, dexterity, and senses to perform firefighting duties as defined in NFPA 1001.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works in inclement weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, airborne particles, smoke as well as fumes produced directly or indirectly from fire suppression or accident conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderately excessive to loud in the field.
