SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the maintenance of county roads, bridges, cattle guards, culverts, signs, and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:
- Determines maintenance need and priority for equipment assigned to this position.
- Determines the type and quantity of materials required to complete jobs.
- Grades the surface of gravel roads as required.
- Prepares and maintains paved surfaces.
- Hauls heavy equipment to and from job site using transport.
- Installs and maintains culverts, bridges, and cattle guards.
- Designs and builds forms used for installation and maintenance of bridges.
- Operates patrol and snowplow to safely remove snow from roadways.
- Performs minimum maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
- Works with the assistant highway supervisor to plan activities and jobs to be performed and completed each week.
- Evaluates situations and make recommendations to the assistant highway supervisor concerning work to be completed.
- Updates the assistant highway supervisor on work status and important developments they may need to know to function effectively.
- Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license and Class A Commercial driver's license (CDLA-A)
An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:
Knowledge
- Knowledge of basic carpentry practice and procedures, specifically in concrete construction.
- Knowledge of general equipment repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of basic road repair procedures.
- Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing and distributing information.
- Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.
Skills
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral communications.
- Managing time effectively.
- Using the tools and equipment listed below.
Abilities
- Complying with Elko County policies and departmental procedures.
- Accomplishing organizational goals and working independently on assignments from beginning to end.
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, city, county, state and federal officials and the public as needed. Dealing with problems courteously and tactfully.
An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
- Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or airborne particles.
- Outdoor work is required in the maintenance of county roads, bridges, and equipment. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate vehicles and various pieces of tools and equipment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand or walk.
- The employee must infrequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud in the field.
