GENERAL SUMMARY, EDUCATION, AND QUALIFICATIONS

The Speech Language Pathologist provides direct intervention services to eligible students;; works to assess, identify, and develop treatment plans for speech disorders in children that will help them improve their language and communications skills; consults and collaborates with teachers and parents regarding speech and language development.

  • Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology required.
  • Must possess a Nebraska Teaching Certificate with a speech endorsement and such other endorsements as may be required by NDE Rules 10 and 24 or state licensure by the Nebraska Licensure Board, in additional to all other required or assigned certification and training.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
  • Clear a state criminal record check and a child abuse check

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, WITH FREQUENCIES: 



  1.  Support student learning by organizing and implementing therapy programs to meet the needs of speech and language impaired students; works to reduce or eliminate speech/language impairment in order to increase communication skills and academic performance; uses a variety of assessment techniques to evaluate students and the conditions that affect their performance in order to resolve behavior issues or learning obstacles 
  1.  Exhibit exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with a wide variety of audiences; counsel and provide guidance to students with varying academic and social abilities, effectively communicating with parents regarding student progress and treatment plans, collaborating with other teachers and school administrators to maintain curriculum standards and performance goals 
  2.  Demonstrate professionalism at all times, and maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.  Serve as a role model to students, exercising good judgment, effectively collaborating with parents in a courteous and honest manner, conducting oneself according to the policies of the District and the Nebraska Board of Education, using appropriate methods to reinforce positive behaviors and resolve conflicts with students and other staff members
  3.  Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job in order to maintain a student’s regular routines, foster student learning and build student relationships; the ability to perform the identified tasks and possess the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; the ability to perform the identified physical requirements

 (Duties may vary by season or student grade levels; however, examples of typical performance responsibilities are listed below (not intended to be all-inclusive).  There may be other duties assigned to a Speech Language Pathologist by the Executive Director of Special Education as part of fulfilling goals that support student learning.)

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate as a member of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT); help in the development of the MDT, administer assessment and evaluation procedures and communicate the results with staff, parents and students
  • Participate in the development of the Individual Education Plan (IEP); develop intervention goals that are educationally relevant; establish a system of documentation that is professional, efficient and accountable, while conforming to state and EPS guidelines.

 

  • Provide specialized direct intervention services on a regular basis to children with identified speech, voice, auditory, fluency and/or language problems to help facilitate their progress in the district’s educational programs and target IEP goals.
  • Assist classroom teachers with necessary modifications to the classroom and serve as a resource to teachers in the areas of speech, language and hearing.
  • Instruct students in techniques for more effective communication, including sign language, lip reading, and voice improvement.
  • Design, develop, and employ alternative diagnostic or communication devices and strategies when required; develop home programs when necessary.
  • Consult with and advise staff on speech and language topics, such as communication strategies, speech and language stimulation, and the SAT process.
  • Advise educators, students and parents in strategies to cope with or avoid communication-related misunderstandings.
  • Refer the parents and the student as appropriate to additional educational or professional services if needed. 
  • Utilize resources to effectively communicate with others with different communication abilities (e.g. non-English speaking, hearing impaired).
  • Participates in meetings as needed; maintains professional skill level through active membership and participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Prepare reports and obtain all permission documents as required by law.
  • Maintain hearing equipment and prepare orders for necessary teaching materials to maintain student programs
  • Perform all other assigned tasks in a professional manner
