Position Overview
The Civil Engineering Technician will work alongside licensed engineers and project teams, supporting both the design and execution of civil/site development projects. This role offers hands-on involvement across all project phases—from planning and design through construction and field support.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed drawings using CAD software (Civil 3D) including profiles, alignments, surfaces, and corridors
- Prepare civil design plans including site layout, grading, drainage, utilities, erosion control, and parking layouts
- Analyze and interpret survey data for design accuracy
- Assist in the design of stormwater systems and gravity sewer infrastructure
- Review sketches, plans, and specifications to ensure alignment with design intent
- Produce final construction documents (both digital and hard copy) for client submission
- Support the preparation of design specifications and contract documents
- Conduct site visits and field measurements to verify existing and as-built conditions
- Monitor construction progress and evaluate contractor work for compliance
- Perform quantity takeoffs to support cost estimating efforts
- Prepare reports including meeting minutes and construction observation documentation
- Coordinate with clients and contractors regarding project scope and design development
- Manage submittals and track project documentation
- Review contractor schedules and monitor progress
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Civil or Architectural Technology (or equivalent experience)
- 10 years of experience in civil/site development drafting or design
- Strong proficiency with Civil 3D and CAD-based design tools
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and survey data
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Preferred Experience
- Extensive experience supporting engineering project delivery
- Background working on federal, state, or municipal projects (DoD, USACE, VA, DOT, etc.)
Work Environment & Requirements
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to travel approximately 5–10% (occasional overnight travel)
- Ability to perform fieldwork including climbing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and working in varied site conditions
