JOB DESCRIPTION


TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid RN/LPN license in the State of Tennessee.
  2. Nursing experience, preferably with children.
  3. Meets necessary health and physical requirements and be fingerprinted.
  4. Must maintain current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation from a recognized Provider (ex., American Heart Association).

REPORTS TO: System-Wide Registered Nurse.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Deliver care based on students' needs appropriate to age and development level.
  2. Provides medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration based on state regulations, parents' permission, and physicians' orders.
  3. Provides care to ill children on a daily basis, including first aid or emergency treatment to injured students and staff.
  4. Assist in the development of individualized student health care
  5. Provides school health services and procedures necessary to provide student access to the educational program as required by TCA 49-5-415.
  6. Maintain comprehensive school health records.
  7. Maintains the school's clinic with adequate equipment and supplies.
  8. Ensures that each child in the school system has proper immunizations.
  9. Respond to any emergency medical situation on any school site.
  10. Be flexible and able to rotate nursing care to any school site as requested.
  11. Follow all OSHA regulations and guidelines.
  12. Assist with OSHA/Bloodborne Pathogen training if requested
  13. Be willing to take the CPR/1st Aid instructor class and train staff within the system.
  14. Assist in the coordination of vision and hearing screenings.
  15. Act as a resource for health education.
  16. Maintain competencies on the required skills needed to perform the job adequately.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This job requires frequent bending, lifting, and pulling which requires proper use of body mechanics. It is often necessary to stand for long periods of time. Other physical demands may require pushing, climbing, stooping, and/or kneeling. May require the lifting of objects that exceed 50 lbs. or the average weight of a child. Requires close mental, visual, and auditory attention in all phases of student care. May require the ability to work in emotionally charged situations.

  1. INTELLIGENCE: The ability to understand instructions and underlying principles. Ability to reason and make judgments.
  2. VERBAL: Ability to understand the meanings of words and ideas associated with them.
  3. NUMERICAL: Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately.
  4. MANUAL DEXTERITY: Ability to move the hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers rapidly and accurately.
  5. FORM PERCEPTION: To make visual comparisons and discriminations and perceive slight differences in shapes and figures.
  6. COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades of the same color.

WORK CONDITIONS:

Normal school working environment.
