What are the responsibilities and job description for the Asphalt Paving Operator position at Elite Paving?
ASPHALT PAVER OPERATOR / SKID STEER
OPERATOR
Elite Paving | Central Illinois
$30-$38/HOUR WEEKLY PERFORMANCE BONUS OPPORTUNITIES
Elite Paving is hiring an experienced Asphalt Paver & Skid Steer Operator to join our growing asphalt crew. This is not an entry-level equipment operator position. We are looking for someone who understands asphalt paving, can think ahead of the machine, and knows how their decisions affect the quality and production of the entire crew.
At Elite Paving, we believe in Integrity, Ownership, Communication, Service, and Teamwork. We take pride in our work, our equipment, our customers, and the finished product.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Operating an asphalt paver safely and efficiently
- Operating a skid steer for fine grading, paving support, cleanup, loading, and material handling
- Maintaining proper paving speed and consistent material flow
- Hopper management and smooth truck exchanges
- Understanding asphalt temperature, mat thickness, yield, and tonnage
- Reading grade, slope, drainage, elevations, and transitions
- Building clean joints, tie-ins, and pavement edges
- Working closely with screed operators, rollers, truck drivers, and the foreman
- Recognizing problems before they become expensive problems
- Daily equipment inspections, greasing, cleaning, fueling, and basic maintenance
A good operator doesn't just watch the controls. You watch the entire operation. You should know where the next truck is, what the material is doing, what the screed and rollers are doing, whether your grade is right, and whether production needs to speed up or slow down.
EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Applicants must have a good working knowledge of paving and heavy equipment - not just the ability to operate the controls. You must understand proper operation, equipment limitations, daily care, and how to recognize developing mechanical problems before they cause damage, unsafe conditions, or costly downtime.
- Complete accurate pre-start and post-shift inspections
- Understand fluid levels, grease points, filters, warning lights, gauges, tracks, tires, hydraulics, and wear items
- Identify unusual noises, vibration, overheating, leaks, hydraulic problems, and changes in machine performance
- Perform routine cleaning, fueling, greasing, and basic preventative maintenance
- Use attachments correctly and understand machine capacity and operating limits
- Report equipment issues immediately and stop operating when continued use could cause damage or create a safety risk
WHAT WE EXPECT
- Shows up on time and ready to work
- Takes pride in quality and pays attention to detail
- Thinks ahead and does not need constant supervision
- Takes ownership of mistakes and helps solve problems
- Communicates immediately when something does not look right
- Respects and takes care of company equipment
- Works safely around trucks, equipment, crew members, and the public
- Is willing to get out of the machine and help the crew when needed
- Has no 'that's not my job' mentality
- Wants to improve, learn, and grow with the company
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years of asphalt paving and/or heavy equipment operating experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience operating an asphalt paver and skid steer
- Good working knowledge of paving and heavy equipment operation, care, inspection, and basic troubleshooting
- Knowledge of asphalt paving practices and procedures
- Ability to understand grade, slope, drainage, and elevations
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions and longer hours during peak paving season
- Experience with rollers, loaders, excavators, milling equipment, or other paving equipment is a plus
