ABOUT THE SHOW
Icons Only examines the lives of multiple extraordinary women of the 20th century and beyond, through the lens of musical theater songwriting. Each song takes the perspective of a different changemaker on the verge of her biggest breakthrough—which, at the time at which the song is sung, could also be her biggest future failure—to unearth unexpected similarities across different generations of boundary-breakers.
The piece explores cultural influencers ranging from Ella Fitzgerald, whose international success broke boundaries for performers of color and exploded stereotypes about the appetite for jazz; to Audrey Hepburn, who served as a spy in the Dutch resistance before becoming an award-winning actress and humanitarian; record-breaking pilot Grace Huntington; boundary-pushing Disney concept artist Mary Blair; and even characters inspired by multiple figures in the women-dominated pop sphere of the 2000s from the musical Crossover (Named to Philadelphia Inquirer’s “Theater to See this Week").
With songs that range in style from Latin jazz to rock, bossa nova, country, and more, Icons Only reveals untold stories of women unknown and revered alike with the goal of putting audience members in their (often fabulous) shoes.
PRODUCTION TIMELINE
The performance will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 9:30pm at The Laurie Beechman Theatre (407 W. 42nd St., New York, NY, 10036). Performers will be called to the venue from 3:00-4:00pm for a soundcheck/technical rehearsal, and a half hour before curtain at 9:00pm.
All additional rehearsals will take place Monday, November 2-Friday, November 6, and will be scheduled around the availability of the performers and musicians. All rehearsals will take place in Midtown Manhattan. Specific location(s) TBD.
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Please submit a 16-32 bar cut of a musical theater, jazz, or pop/rock song to the Google Form linked below. We are primarily looking for performers to showcase a strong belt or mix. If you have a cut from another genre that accomplishes such, you are welcome to use it. Submissions are due Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:59pm EST. Performers will be notified in the upcoming week.
Performers will receive a small stipend and professional photography/videography of the performance.
