Responsible for ensuring appropriate, consistent administration of plan benefits by reviewing clinical information and assessing medical necessity under relevant guidelines and/or medical policies. Focuses on less complex and potentially higher volume benefit plans and/or contracts, following standard procedures that do not require the training or skill of a registered nurse.


Primary duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Confirms medical services are appropriate based on assigned benefit plan, medical policies, clinical guidelines, plan benefits, and/or scripted algorithms within scope of licensure.

  • Work may be facilitated, in part, by algorithmic or automated processes.

  • Handles less complex benefit plans and/or contracts.

  • Conducts and may approve precertification, concurrent, retrospective, out-of-network, and/or appropriateness of treatment setting reviews by assessing clinical information against appropriate medical policies, clinical guidelines, and the relevant benefit plan/contract.

  • May process a medical necessity denial determination made by a Medical Director. Refers complex or non-routine reviews to more senior nurses and/or Medical Directors.

  • Does not issue medical necessity non-certifications.

Requirements:

  • Requires AS in nursing and minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in an ambulatory or hospital setting or minimum of 1 year of prior utilization management, medical management and/or quality management, and/or call center experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

  • Current unrestricted RN license in applicable state(s) required.

  • Familiarity with Utilization Management Guidelines, ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding, and managed health care including HMO, PO and POS plans strongly preferred.

  • Previous utilization and/or quality management and/or call center experience preferred.

  • Must reside at least 50 miles or 1 hours from an Elevance Health pulse point location. Current active, valid and unrestricted LPN/LVN or RN Florida or compact license and/or certification to practice as a health professional.

  • Multi-state licensure is required if this individual is providing services in multiple states.


Job Type: Contract to possible hire


Additional Details:

  • Work schedule: Tuesday- Saturday, 8am- 5pm

  • Days off Sunday and Monday

Elevance Health operates in a Hybrid Workforce Strategy. Unless specified as primarily virtual by the hiring manager, contractors are required to work at an Elevance Health location at least once per week, and potentially several times per week. Specific requirements and expectations for time onsite will be discussed as part of the hiring process. Candidates must reside within 50 miles or 1-hour commute each way of a relevant Elevance Health location.
