Primary Purpose:

Works under the supervision of the teacher and assists in the special education students' daily training program.

Qualifications:

Education/Certifications

• Associate degree or 60 college credit hours. Praxis Paraprofessional exam may be substituted for college hours and must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with children with disabilities is preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Ability to work with children with disabilities.
• Ability to interact with the public and other staff is required.
• Ability to meet multiple demands from several people.
• Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
• Ability to communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Implements IEP goals under the direction of the special education teacher, including implementation of the instructional program as assigned.
2. Assists teacher in routine classroom operation.
3. Implements/follows teacher’s instructions of classroom procedures.
4. Prepares planned instructional materials, attendance reports, and class reports as assigned. ·
5. Assists with the development and maintenance of special education records.
6. Assists instructional staff in the supervision of students while they are loading and unloading buses, going to special classes, in the cafeteria, on the playground, etc., and in the classroom in the absence of the teacher.
7. Assists with behavior management programs and techniques. 
8. Understand and assist in meeting the medical needs of students.
9. Feeds or helps students feed themselves, if necessary.
10. Assists students with toileting and other personal hygiene functions, if necessary.  Assists with sanitation of room and equipment.
11. Lifts or assists with lifting students with physical disabilities, if necessary.
12. Maintains confidentiality and observes professional ethics.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervise students when the teacher is not present.

• Maintain emotional control under stress.
• Work with frequent interruptions.
• The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. regularly lift to 50 lbs. and push or pull up to 100 pounds. The position is exposed to infection and injury at a greater risk than the average perso

Physical Demands:

• Prolonged standing, walking, sitting, occasional bending/stooping, pushing, pulling and twisting.
• Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse, occasional reaching.
• Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
• Prolonged use of a computer.

Environmental Demands:

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
