Elementary Classroom Teacher

Purpose:  Creates a safe learning environment, sets high education standards, and enables all students to master the skills and acquire the knowledge  to become productive, responsible members of society. 

Reports to: Building Principal 

Requirements:

• Valid Iowa teaching license required.

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.

Responsibilities:

• Teaches knowledge and skills using district-adopted curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching content. Prepares and reviews all curriculum materials to ensure their appropriateness and relevance. 
• Instruct pupils in life skills and basic subject matter specified in state law, district outcomes, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district. 
• Establishes and maintains a positive, inclusive classroom culture based on high standards of pupil behavior.  Uses routines and rituals to create student ownership and maximize instructional time.
• Develops units of instruction that are appropriately sequenced for development of conceptual understanding over time. 
• Creates lesson plans that are aligned with grade-level standards; have clearly articulated learning targets; include a variety of instructional strategies and activities; and include scaffolding.
• Designs learning activities that relate course content to the physical world and allow students to transfer what they learn to real-life applications. 
• Encourages equitable and purposeful student participation in work that embodies substantive intellectual engagement reading, thinking, speaking, writing, problem-solving and meaning-making. 
• Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment or on a district level. 
• Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of pupils; maintains required inventory records. 
• Creates multiple assessment opportunities for students to demonstrate progress. Monitors student progress and provides evidence of learning to students, families, and staff. 
• Uses formative assessment data to inform instructional decisions, give targeted feedback to students, and/or make referrals to student assistance teams.
• Adapts activities to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil. 
• Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. 
• Maintains an auditable record of pupil attendance and makes daily reports of pupils absent each period. 
• Communicates with students, parents, and school counselors on pupil achievement and progress. Updates student management system in a timely manner.
• Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth opportunities. 
• Shares in supervision of student activities as normally assigned, such as class sponsor, and participates in faculty committees.
• Actively supervises assigned pupils during in and out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday. Supervises hallways during passing times and other assigned times.
• Operates in accordance with board policies and sees that all policies of the board pertaining to employeeʼs area of jurisdiction are implemented. 
• Performs such other tasks as may be assigned by the building principal and/or superintendent designee.
• Serves as a positive role model in the school and community and demonstrates professionalism.
• Follow school board policies and district/school procedures and guidelines.

• Other duties as assigned by the building principal and/or superintendent designee.

Terms of Employment:  Salary and length of contract to be established by the board.

Evaluation:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
