Job Overview
The SMT Manager is a hybrid technical and people leadership role responsible for leading the Surface Mount Technology operations while developing team members' technical capabilities. This position combines hands-on technical expertise in SMT programming and optimization with people-focused leadership that cultivates a solutions-oriented, high-performing team. The Production Manager monitors key dashboard metrics, addresses real-time production needs, and leads daily production activities, including line changeovers and setup coverage.
Primary Responsibilities
People Leadership & Development (40%)
Team Leadership & Engagement:
- Lead and develop the SMT production team, fostering a positive, collaborative work environment aligned with EDM's People First value
- Facilitate regular solutions-focused team meetings to address challenges, celebrate successes, and drive continuous improvement
- Engage proactively with cross-functional partners (production planning, AOI operators, quality, engineering) to ensure aligned communication and coordinated action.
Skills Development & Training:
- Develop a rotation of programmers from the production team – identify team members with aptitude and interest, create individualized development plans, and provide hands-on mentoring in machine programming
- Schedule, coordinate, and deliver training for new and existing operators on SMT processes, equipment operation, and programming fundamentals.
- Create a culture of learning where team members feel empowered to grow technical skills and take ownership of equipment performance.
Operational Management:
- Assign daily/weekly work and modify assignments as production needs change
- Monitor dashboard metrics and take immediate action to meet production requirements
- Review SMT performance data, quality metrics, and team communication to identify improvement opportunities
- Lead daily production activities, including line changeovers and setup coverage
Technical Leadership & Programming (40%)
Equipment Programming & Optimization:
- Program and optimize SMT equipment to meet customer specifications and internal quality standards
- Develop and maintain machine programs for SMT placement, AOI, and related equipment (Conformal Coating, Selective Solder, Routing as applicable)
- Ensure equipment operates efficiently with minimal variation, delivering consistent, high-quality output
- Utilize coordinate-based programming and CAD/CAM tools to create and refine manufacturing programs
Process Improvement & Control:
- Continuously assess equipment performance and processes for opportunities to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality
- Collaborate with the cross-functional programming automation team to implement and optimize automated solutions
- Implement proactive process controls to prevent issues before they impact production
- Conduct root cause analysis on equipment failures or process deviations; document findings and implement corrective measures
Equipment Maintenance & Support:
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and troubleshoot technical issues on SMT production equipment
- Support capital project initiatives by evaluating new equipment, assisting with installation, and ensuring successful integration
- Stay current with SMT technology advancements and recommend upgrades that align with business goals
Strategic & Cross-Functional Collaboration (20%)
- Conduct cost-benefit analysis and ROI assessments for process improvements and equipment investments
- Provide technical input on production planning decisions to optimize scheduling and resource utilization
- Serve as the technical SMT subject matter expert for the organization
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives across the facility
Key Requirements

Problem-Solving Orientation: Demonstrated ability to identify and address challenges promptly and effectively, reflecting our value of being solutions focused.
Manufacturing Experience: 3 years in an electronics manufacturing environment, preferably having worked in an SMT line.
Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Technical Proficiency: Solid understanding of surface mount technology processes, equipment, and troubleshooting
Qualifications
Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
Proven leader with a knack for participative leading
Exceptional problem-solving skills both real-time and root cause analysis.
Clear and effective communication (verbal and written).
Experience in an electronics manufacturing environment (PCB & SMT assembly preferred). If not, the candidate must be willing to learn these skills.
Preferred
Experience with CAD/CAM software (AutoCAD, Altium, SolidWorks)
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles
Previous experience training or mentoring technical team members
IPC certification (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001)
