Job Title: Staff Accountant (Construction – Electrical Subcontractor)

Freestate Electric is a growing and well-established electrical contractor seeking a Staff Accountant to support our construction accounting operations. This role is ideal for someone who understands the fast-paced nature of the construction industry and has experience working with subcontractors, job costing, and project-based financials.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts across multiple active projects
- Perform job cost accounting (labor, materials, subcontractors, overhead)
- Process AIA billings, pay applications, release of liens and other forms
- Posting payments and reconciling customer accounts
- Maintain organized project documentation (contracts, change orders, etc.)
- Monitoring accounts receivable aging and following up on past due balances
- Track retainage and manage lien waivers and compliance documentation
- Support project managers with budgeting, cost tracking, and variance analysis
- Assist with monthly close, accruals, and financial reporting
- Prepare Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and support revenue recognition
- Support audits and provide required financial documentation
- Accounts payable and payroll processing backup
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 2–5 years of accounting experience (construction or subcontracting preferred)
- Experience with job costing, retainage, and progress billing
- Familiarity with electrical or trade subcontracting is a strong plus
- Experience in a union environment or with union reporting is a plus
Technical Skills
- Experience with construction accounting systems (e.g., VISTA or similar)
- Familiarity with Procore or similar project management tools is a plus
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis)
- Knowledge of AIA billing preferred
