Staff Accountant

Job Title: Staff Accountant (Construction – Electrical Subcontractor)

Freestate Electric is a growing and well-established electrical contractor seeking a Staff Accountant to support our construction accounting operations. This role is ideal for someone who understands the fast-paced nature of the construction industry and has experience working with subcontractors, job costing, and project-based financials.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts across multiple active projects
• Perform job cost accounting (labor, materials, subcontractors, overhead)
• Process AIA billings, pay applications, release of liens and other forms
• Posting payments and reconciling customer accounts
• Maintain organized project documentation (contracts, change orders, etc.)
• Monitoring accounts receivable aging and following up on past due balances
• Track retainage and manage lien waivers and compliance documentation
• Support project managers with budgeting, cost tracking, and variance analysis
• Assist with monthly close, accruals, and financial reporting
• Prepare Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and support revenue recognition
• Support audits and provide required financial documentation
• Accounts payable and payroll processing backup

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 2–5 years of accounting experience (construction or subcontracting preferred)
• Experience with job costing, retainage, and progress billing
• Familiarity with electrical or trade subcontracting is a strong plus
• Experience in a union environment or with union reporting is a plus

Technical Skills

• Experience with construction accounting systems (e.g., VISTA or similar)
• Familiarity with Procore or similar project management tools is a plus
• Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis)
• Knowledge of AIA billing preferred
