THE ROLE

The Processing Lead is equal parts operator and host: the person who keeps the warehouse floor running efficiently and makes sure every volunteer who's part of that flow is genuinely enjoying it. Every day looks a little different: donations arrive on their own schedule, priorities shift with community need, and this role is always looking for a better way to sort, pack, and move product, then turns that work into something volunteers want to come back for, through creative challenges, friendly competition, and matching people to tasks that play to their strengths. You'll thrive here if you love solving process puzzles as much as you love people, adapt quickly when plans change, and take ownership of a fast-paced, physical workday without losing your warmth.

Process Improvement & Warehouse Operations:

  • Continuously look for and test better ways to sort, pack, and stage food and non-food items (frozen bulk, refrigerated, dry), from workflow tweaks to station layout to task sequencing, that make the line faster and volunteer time more productive.

  • Coordinate product flow along the distribution line, presort, inspect, sanitize, and repackage dry and refrigerated product, and prepare agency orders accurately and on schedule.

  • Follow first in, first out (FIFO) practices to reduce waste and maintain inventory accuracy.

  • Operate a manual or electric pallet jack safely; support forklift-assisted tasks where certified.

  • Adjust quickly to shifting daily priorities, whether that's incoming donations, volunteer availability, or a last-minute special project.

Volunteer Engagement & Leadership:

  • Design creative challenges, mini-competitions, and games that turn routine sorting and packing into something volunteers genuinely enjoy.

  • Use strengths-based coordination: get to know volunteers quickly and match them to tasks that fit their skills, energy, and interests.

  • Welcome and orient volunteers each shift, making sure every person feels appreciated and set up to succeed, regardless of experience level.

  • Build authentic relationships with volunteers, donors, and partner organizations that make people want to come back.

Food Safety & Facility Standards:

  • Enforce personnel and food safety policies, and keep the work area, docks, and storage spaces clean and sanitized daily.

  • Maintain accurate processing records and shift reports.

Community Representation:

  • Represent EPFH as a warm, professional ambassador to every volunteer, donor, and partner, and support a collaborative, transparent team where everyone contributes to the mission.

  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, along with experience training, organizing, or coaching groups, formal or informal.

  • A knack for spotting a better way to run a shift or sort and pack product, and the initiative to test it out.

  • A genuine enjoyment of connecting with people from all backgrounds and ages, and a talent for making work fun.

  • Strong organizational skills, basic computer skills (email, internet, word processing/spreadsheets), and the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to operate a manual or electric pallet jack, and comfort lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly throughout a shift.

  • Unquestionable character and a genuine commitment to serving our community.

After hire, you are expected to have or obtain (within the first three months, if not already held):

  • CPR Certification

  • ServSafe Certification

  • Forklift Certification

  • Electric Pallet Jack Certification

Still reach out if you:

  • Are new to warehouse work but bring strong people skills and a genuine willingness to learn.

  • Have coordinated groups around individual strengths before, a sports team, classroom, shift crew, or volunteer group, even outside a traditional job.

This position requires successful completion of a background check and drug screening, and a valid driver's license. The role involves lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly, standing for extended periods, and regular exposure to varying temperatures (warehouse, chiller, freezer) and outdoor conditions. Steel-toed shoes and company apparel are required on the distribution floor.
