Job Description:

The Mariachi Coach is responsible for directing, instructing, and developing the mariachi music program. This role involves teaching students the technical skills, cultural history, and performance practices inherent to traditional mariachi music. The coach will lead rehearsals, select repertoire, arrange music as needed, and prepare student ensembles for school performances, community events, and competitions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Leadership & Music Direction

  • Provide high-quality instruction in traditional mariachi instruments, including violín, trompeta, guitarrón, vihuela, and guitarra, as well as vocal technique and styling.
  • Teach students music theory, sight-reading, ear training, and standard mariachi performance techniques (e.g., manicos for rhythm instruments).
  • Select, arrange, and adapt age-appropriate repertoire representing various mariachi styles (e.g., son, ranchera, bolero, huapango, polka).
  • Conduct regular rehearsals, balancing group ensemble work with sectional instruction.

2. Ensemble & Performance Management

  • Coordinate, schedule, and direct public performances, school assemblies, community events, and regional/state competitions.
  • Prepare students for auditions, solo performances, and ensemble evaluations.
  • Manage stage presence, traditional attire (traje de charro), choreography, and overall performance aesthetics.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of sheet music, instruments, accessories, and performance uniforms.

3. Cultural & Program Advocacy

  • Foster a deep appreciation for the cultural history, traditions, and significance of mariachi music.
  • Build a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture among student musicians.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, school administrators, and community partners regarding schedules, expectations, and program needs.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts or grant compliance if required by the organization.

Qualifications & SkillsEducation & Experience

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Ethnomusicology, or a related field; or equivalent professional performance and teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency playing and teaching at least two primary mariachi instruments (ideally representing both the rhythm/armonía and melody sections).
  • Prior experience directing a youth or school-based musical ensemble is highly preferred.

Technical & Soft Skills

  • Bilingual Proficiency: Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in both English and Spanish is highly desirable, as many traditional lyrics and teaching resources are in Spanish.
  • Strong knowledge of mariachi history, traditional styles, and regional variations.
  • Excellent classroom management, mentorship, and motivational skills for working with diverse youth populations.
  • Strong organizational and logistical skills for planning events and transporting equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Requires flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends for performances, competitions, and community events.
  • Ability to lift and transport musical instruments and sound equipment as needed.

Pay: From $15.00 per hour
