Job Summary

Salary to commensurate with qualifications

The Sheriff’s Office provides public safety at all times and therefore every position is deemed essential. All positions are in-person and not eligible for remote work. Every position is also subject to recall based on the needs of the Office to keep the community safe.

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Tuesday – Friday, 8:00am – 6:00pm , subject to change.

Under the direction of a Wildland Fire Supervisor; Fire/Deputy Fire Warden: Is responsible for performing pre-suppression/fire prevention (mitigation) and wildland fire suppression activities for El Paso County Sherriff’s Office (EPSO). The wildland fire management unit provides regional support for fires throughout the season and performs initial and extended attack firefighting.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains high-power equipment including chainsaws, pruning saws, blowers, brush cutters, chippers, mowers, and pumps.
  • Operates and maintains firefighting and fire mitigation hand tools, firefighting engines, and emergency medical equipment.
  • Preserves evidence at fire scenes.
  • Performs wildfire suppression including cutting fire lines, using engines and hand tools to suppress fires.
  • Performs wildfire mitigation of trees, brush or dead and downed woody material that include thinning, removing, chipping, pruning, limbing, felling, and bucking.
  • Participates in fire preparedness and prevention programs, wildland fire courses, community outreach, and public engagement to promote fire safety, prevention and awareness as directed.
  • Participates in training programs for wildland firefighters and volunteer wildland firefighters.
  • Participates in the maintenance and inventory of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs the function of the on-call fire duty officer (FDO) on a rotating basis.
  • May deploy on fire assignments.
  • Maintains accurate vehicle maintenance record books
  • Maintains accurate Crew Time Reports (CTR) daily as requested by supervisor.
  • Performs general facility maintenance.
  • Participates in interagency assignments outside of El Paso County,
  • Supports the Sheriff's Office strategic plan.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of mitigation tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of working with wildland fire equipment and tools including pumps, power saws, aircraft, radios, and hand tools.
  • Capable of performing strenuous outdoor work safely and productively.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with the public.
  • Successfully complete "Arduous" Work Capacity Test (pack test, 3 miles 45lbs pack in 45 minutes).
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with government employees, contractors, fire protection districts and the public.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.


Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of employment.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Minimum one or more seasons as a NWCG Fire Fighter 2 (FFT2).


Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Compliance within six months of employment.
  • Current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification including S-130 and S-190, ICS-100 and ICS-700 training required prior to date of hire;
    • S-131, S-212, S-260, and S-290 trainings preferred.
  • NWCG Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) preferred.
  • NWCG Single Resource Boss (SRB) or higher preferred.
  • Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License or Colorado State IFSAC Driver Operator Pumper preferred.
  • Advanced First Aid and CPR certifications preferred.
Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, truth verification examination, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.


Work Conditions

Duties require extreme physical exertion, working outdoors in all terrain and weather conditions, working long hours, and for extended periods of time. Potential for working in stressful and dangerous situations, including steep terrain, inclement weather, hazardous traffic, exposure to smoke, flame, hazardous materials, and biohazards. Ability to work long hours with the possibility of being absent from home for consecutive days or more. Must be able to carry up to 45 lbs, run, bend, twist, walk and/or climb. Must be able to safely lift and transport 45 lbs over flat terrain for 3 miles in less than 45 minutes. All fire personnel are required to wear safety clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during regular work hours and while firefighting. Must be able to report to the Emergency Services Section Building within one hour when on call. Subject to call out during emergencies. Subject to shift schedule changes based on operation/business needs.
