Early Head Start Home Visitor

Salary Range depends on experience and Education

A.A. Degree: Starting Salary: 48,720 - $24.98 based on a 37.5 hrs/weekly schedule

B.A. Degree: Starting Salary: $51,504 - $26.41 based on a 37.5 hrs/weekly schedule

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

General:

• Works with 10-12 assigned families and children on a scheduled one-to-one weekly basis in their homes for at least 90 minutes minimum. Caseload can vary based on program needs.
• Assists families in identifying family resources and needs.
• Maintains confidentiality of family records and information.
• Encourages and promotes the family’s achievement of self-sufficiency.
• Routinely is accompanied by the Early Childhood Supervisor on home visits as well as program specialist when deemed necessary.
• Partners will parents achieve and maintain 85% attendance throughout the program year.
• Provides developmental, mental health, and nutritional screening and assessment of children to determine the need for further evaluation, referrals or intervention.
• Works with parents to develop weekly home visits and weekly activity plans based on each child’s assessment and identified family needs.
• Maintains compliance with all Head Start Program Performance Standards related to staff qualifications and professional development requirements, including successful completion of required credentialing within established timelines.

Parent Involvement:

• Partners with parents in developing and fostering healthy self-concepts for themselves and, having begun this effort will begin assisting parents in becoming the prime family educator.
• Fosters the belief in parents that they are their child’s first teacher and reinforces this concept with practical suggestions for its development.
• Supports and encourages families in keeping an on-going file of weekly home visit plans, handouts, health documents, assessments and letters from programs.
• Encourage and maintain at least 2 parents to get involved in program governance and volunteer opportunities in the program.

Social Service/ Mental Health:

• Provides or guides family through a family assessment process to assist in determining areas for family or personal growth.
• Make referrals to community services offices such as family planning, food stamps, employment, health services, vocational rehabilitation, psychological services, etc.
• Assist parents in utilizing fully available community resources.

Education:

• Assist parents in developing ways of using household resources in educational activities with their children.
• Provides parents and children with group socialization experiences.
• Provides and/or guides parents in ongoing educational assessment of children enrolled in the program with appropriate assessment tools. Utilizes and coaches’ parents in utilizing the assessments / observation results to design learning experiences and activities for children.

Health:

• Guides families, when necessary, in the arrangement and transportation of medical and dental appointments as required by Head Start, including documenting designated follow-ups in Child Lus. Must plan one nutrition activity at least once each month during a home visit.
• Monitors CHDP health services and immunizations.
• Conduct health and safety checks on each home visit.
• Requests medical records and follows up on status of request for assigned case load.

Other Secondary Responsibilities

• Completes required case and program documentation and reports.
• Provides supervisor with program data and reports on a monthly and quarterly basis.
• Networks and collaborates with involved service providers in the community.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience/Education

• Associate’s degree accepted, bachelor’s degree preferred in child development, human development, early childhood education, psychology, counseling, social work or a related field.
• Previous experience providing early childhood education, parent education, or child-focused counseling to at-risk youth and families.
• Previous experience providing direct services to low-income families in a multi-cultural community.

Skills/Characteristics

• Must have a working knowledge of the developmental needs of infants and toddlers, effective parenting skills, psychosocial risk factors and counseling techniques.
• Must have a working knowledge of parenting, early childhood education, and the developmental needs of children and adolescents, typically resulting from any combination of formal education, seminars, and related work experience.
• Must have training and/or experience working with infant/toddlers with disabilities and their families.
• Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
• Bilingual English Spanish preferred.
