Position Summary

The Heavy Duty Fleet Mechanic reports directly to the Heavy Duty Fleet Manager and is responsible for servicing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing eFUEL's fleet of Class 7 and Class 8 diesel trucks and trailers. This position performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs both in the shop and in the field using a company-provided mobile service truck. The successful candidate is self-motivated, safety-focused, and capable of working independently while supporting fleet reliability and operational efficiency.

Candidates must provide their own tools.

REQUIRED: A valid California Class A or Class B CDL with BOTH Hazmat (H/X) and Tanker (N) endorsements is required. Candidates who do not hold these endorsements will not be considered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on Class 7 and Class 8 diesel trucks and trailers.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services according to manufacturer and company schedules.
  • Conduct engine, transmission, suspension, steering, brake, exhaust, and driveline diagnostics and repairs.
  • Inspect and repair diesel-powered vehicles using electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform DOT inspections, 90-day inspections, and ensure compliance with CHP and FMCSA regulations.
  • Complete accurate repair orders and enter all repairs into the company's computerized fleet maintenance system.
  • Test drive vehicles to verify repairs and proper operation.
  • Follow company inspection procedures and repair standards.
  • Repair vehicles at multiple company terminals and customer locations as required.
  • Diagnose, repair, and adjust air brake systems.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, including PTO units, lift gates, and dump bodies.
  • Mount, dismount, repair, and replace heavy-duty truck and trailer tires.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and metal repairs as needed.
  • Respond to roadside breakdowns and perform emergency field repairs.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
  • Follow all OSHA, DOT, CHP, environmental, and company safety regulations.
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements associated with hazardous waste generator locations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of 2 yearsof hands-on experience repairing heavy-duty diesel trucks and trailers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (technical school or vocational training preferred).
  • Valid California Driver License with a clean driving record.
  • Class A or Class B CDL.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to repair diesel engines, electrical systems, suspension, steering, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience performing DOT and CHP inspections.
  • Ability to use computerized fleet maintenance software.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must provide and maintain your own standard mechanic hand tools.
  • Willingness to travel between terminals and respond to emergency roadside repairs.

Preferred

  • ASE Certification or equivalent diesel mechanic certifications.
  • Brake Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience with OEM diagnostic software such as:
  • Cummins INSITE
  • Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL)
  • PACCAR Solutions
  • Allison DOC
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This position works both inside the maintenance shop and outdoors at company terminals and customer locations. The employee is regularly exposed to:

  • Diesel fuel
  • Oils and lubricants
  • Dust and dirt
  • Loud equipment
  • Vehicle exhaust
  • Various weather conditions
  • Confined spaces
  • Elevated work areas

The employee routinely operates company vehicles, mobile service trucks, lifts, jacks, diagnostic equipment, welding equipment, fueling equipment, handheld scanners, and smartphones.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands listed below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

The employee must regularly:

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, squat, climb, crawl, and reach overhead.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Work underneath vehicles.
  • Operate hand and power tools.
  • Perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Safely operate company vehicles and equipment.

Schedule

This is a full-time position.

Typical Schedule

  • Monday through Friday
  • Day Shift

Overtime, weekends, overnight travel, and emergency response work may be required based on business needs.

Travel

Travel between company terminals and customer locations is required. Occasional overnight travel may also be necessary.
