GIS TECHNICIAN
The purpose of this classification is to assist in producing, maintaining, and manipulating maps and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases, using a variety of hardware and software, for County agencies, cities, and the general public.
Digitizes information; creates, manipulates, and maintains database; compares/QC zoning information, mylars, and tax digest; creates Arc/View projects. Interprets aerial photographs; loads air photos from CD’s to hard drives. Researches plat information; coordinates with Assessor’s map technician on map and parcel questions and errors. Evaluates software; installs software revisions and updates; removes software. Plots “E” and “D” size maps; prints maps; changes plotter paper and ink. Backs up and transfers data on zip drive; reboots computer system. Produces and converts data; purges old working data files and coverages. Edits parcels in County coverage; creates new parcels. Adds label points with data entry. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, or other software programs. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Operates a scanner and uses various scanner software. Answers the telephone; takes messages; re-files plats and maps; orders supplies. Researches plats at courthouse. Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in geography, or closely related field; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes Arc/Info training and computer experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
