Job Summary
The Assistant Director, Communications and Marketing at the Center for Public Leadership (CPL) helps drive the development and operationalization of the center's communications and marketing strategies, effectively promoting CPL's scholarship, students, and programs. The assistant director plays a leading role as content strategist and marketer, helping identify and reach key stakeholders and audiences within the Harvard community (such as current students and alumni) and in the public sphere (such as leading scholars and public leaders across the government, business, and non-profit sectors). The assistant director is responsible for the development, production, and dissemination of digital and print content and collateral that grows CPL's reach, promotes CPL programming, and elevates CPL scholarship.
Position Description
Working in an energetic and fast-paced team, the assistant director provides communications and marketing leadership across a range of functions :
Strategic Communications
- Develop and execute proactive data-driven communications and marketing strategies that effectively highlight CPL's scholarship, expand access to public leadership curricular material, and enhance the CPL brand.
- Oversee the production of all CPL-branded materials, including newsletters, social media, and print materials, ensuring they accurately reflect CPL's work and mission and elevate CPL's faculty, students, alumni, and other community members.
- Provide guidance and support in the development of robust online and print content for CPL resident affiliated faculty and faculty-led programs. Advise faculty programs on effective leveraging of communications tools to identify and reach target audiences.
- Manage CPL's website, ensuring it effectively reaches CPL's key stakeholders, including through regular updates with compelling content.
- Support CPL's donor engagement efforts through creation of compelling stewardship materials that spotlight CPL's people and programs.
- Manage budgetary activities, such as digital advertising and vendor budgets.
- Serve as the operational liaison between CPL and the Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA) to ensure CPL strategy and best practices align with school priorities.
- Manage communications unit, overseeing relevant staff as well as outside communications vendors (such as designers and copy editors).
- Support the director of engagement and external relations in building and maintaining strong relationships with media outlets and journalists to enhance CPL's visibility, proactively pitching stories and promoting the work of CPL faculty, students, alumni, and initiatives to secure media coverage and amplify the center's impact.

This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending one year from date of hire, with possibility of renewal.
This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. As a campus-based institution, we place a high value on the in-person experience, cross-team collaboration, and strong community building in order to create a vibrant campus for our students, faculty, staff, and research fellows. The position is required to work in-person on campus a minimum of three days per week during the academic year. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager. Salary Range : $76,400 - $130,000
Note : Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
