    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    The functions of the Speech Language Pathologist include serving as a member of the
    multidisciplinary team to determine eligibility for Special Education services under the disability
    of speech impairment, serving as representative of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD)
    committee to develop appropriate Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with speech
    impairments, and providing instructional speech therapy services to eligible students.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education/Certification:
    TEA Certified Speech Language Pathologist: Holds a Bachelor's degree and has a TEA teaching
    certificate. (TEA Certificates for SLPs were discontinued as of August, 1996).
    Licensed Speech Language Pathologist: Holds a Bachelor's degree, may have TEA teaching certificate,
    and is licensed by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
    (Individuals with a Bachelor's degree were able to obtain a license as long as they had been practicing on or before
    September, 1986. A Master's Degree is now required for licensure.)
    Licensed Intern: Holds a Master's Degree and is licensed by the State Board of Examiners for
    Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology but has not completed a Clinical Fellowship Year required for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (C.C.C.).
    Certificate of Clinical Competence Speech Language Pathologist: Holds a Master's Degree, holds a
    Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA),
    and is licensed by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    Appraisal Management
    • Complies with all federal, state, local and campus policies, operating procedures and legal requirements.
    • Reviews, follows, and maintains evaluative techniques, kits, manuals, etc., as needed.
    Case Management
    • Consults with the campus Principal and staff for scheduling of students for speech and language services.
    • Plans for the implementation of IEP goals and objectives by preparing appropriate instructional materials and planning appropriate instructional activities.
    • Implements the IEP goals and objectives as per the most current ARD recommendation.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all student information.

    • Works collaboratively and constructively with colleagues and other professionals towards meeting individual student needs.
    • Promotes and supports environment which is conducive to positive staff morale and directed towards achievement of the campuses, departments, and district's mission.
    Professional Growth and Development
    • Takes initiative to participate in professional development activities correlated to the child-centered process with emphasis on speech and language issues in order to keep abreast of current techniques, regulations, and to obtain continuing education credits for licensure.
    • Researches information to enhance therapeutic methods and/or increased understanding of low-incidenceand/or complex cases.
    • Conducts oneself in a professional ethical manner in accordance with generally accepted community standards and complies with State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology code of Ethics.
    • Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others.
    • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Plans collaboratively with, monitors, and supervises the Licensed Assistant according to the regulations set forth by the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
    • Plans collaboratively with, monitors, and supervises the Licensed Intern according to the regulations set forth by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and State Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA).
    • Supervises TEA Certified Speech Language Pathologists and Licensed Speech Language Pathologists for the purpose of SHARS Medicaid billing.
    • The supervising SLPs will make all initial contact with each student served by the speech-language pathologist assistant (contact may include evaluation.)
    • The supervision SLPs must provide the required supervision 9direct and in-direct) as required by SBESLPA. Time must be allowed for appropriate training and supervision.
    • The supervising SLPs must maintain supervision and performance records that may be requested by the Board.
    • The supervising SLPs are responsible for all student services performed by the assistant.
    • The supervising SLPs will review records maintained by the SLP-Assistant.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    • Maintain emotional control under stress; regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying; may be required to lift and transfer students to and
    from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    • Supervisors of licensed speech-language assistants must be licensed by SBESLPA as speech-language pathologists. Licensed SLPs/SLP Assistants are required to obtain continuing education hours to maintain current
    license status.
