Job Description: Custodian
Classification: 20 hours per week/Hourly/Part Time Support Staff
Responsible to: Edinboro United Methodist Church Staff Pastor Parish Relations
Committee through Lead Pastor.
Purpose: To serve the Edinboro United Methodist Church by keeping the building clean and maintaining the security and safety of the building and grounds.
Qualifications: The Custodian shall:

- Be a caring, empathetic person who works well with people.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and use of safe work habits and requirements.
- Possess working knowledge of guidelines and regulations as issued and monitored by licensing or accrediting agencies such as Fire Regulations, PA Department of Health,
Department of Labor and Industry, and other such entities.
- Possess knowledge of public building cleaning practices and custodial supply utilization and management.
- Possess the ability to plan and organize assigned duties and work effectively without immediate supervision.
- Be energetic and take pride in keeping the Church safe and clean.
- Be physically capable of carrying out required activities.
- Be flexible in availability to accommodate the schedule of church activities.
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the position of Custodian shall include, but not be limited to the following:
A. General expectations
1. The Custodian shall be considered a staff member and attend applicable staff meetings.
2. Work hours will be scheduled by the Lead Pastor or designee.
3. Time sheets will be approved by the Lead Pastor or designee.
B. Specific Tasks
1. Building Security
a. Unlock and prepare the building for occupancy during business hours and/or special events at the request of the Lead Pastor. b. Lock and secure the building at the conclusion of each day you are scheduled to work. c. Check and secure church building by 2:00 pm each Sunday.
2. Regular weekly cleaning tasks to include: a. Clean and sanitize all rest rooms; keep paper products well supplied; mop floors. b. Sweep and mop all other hard surface floor areas at least weekly. c. Empty all trash receptacles in the building each day. d. Keep all entryways clean and free of obstructions. Sweep or vacuum inside entries daily and keep the outside entry areas clear of snow, ice and debris as needed. e. Dust all countertops, desktops and miscellaneous surfaces weekly. Give particular attention to desktops in all offices. f. Vacuum carpeted areas weekly. g. Clean kitchen countertops and sinks daily. Mop after use and at least weekly. h. Takes garbage to curb for pick-up
3. Tasks related to building use per church calendar: a. Set up rooms for meetings, classes, and events as necessary. This includes setting up necessary tables, chairs, audio/visual equipment, and the like; and /or putting away tables, chairs and equipment following event. b. Responsible to perform custodial duties relative to special events such as Bible
School, weddings, funerals, and other outside group usage. c. Washes dishes for Lenten Lunches and Funerals when volunteers are unavailable.
4. Tasks for maintaining building presentation: a. Cleans out refrigerator and oven b. Clean the mops c. Responsible for cleaning the carpets d. Cleans windows on outside of first floor e. Assist in watering and floral arranging inside building f. Changes lightbulbs g. Adjust clocks at time change h. Sets thermostats – checks at least every six months i. Cleans window screens once per year j. Picks up litter around outside of the church building k. Put out ‘soaker hoses’ in Spring and Fall
5. Tasks in cooperation with Administrative Assistant a. Purchase supplies for kitchen b. Orders cleaning supplies
6. Special Projects as needed or assigned by the Board of Trustees such as stripping and waxing floors or room painting
7. Relationship with Board of Trustees: a. Liaison to Board of Trustees, attending meetings when requested in order to provide communication in relation to outside contractors and/or the maintenance needs. b. Inform Chairperson of Trustees of any maintenance requirements and/or needs. c. Remain alert to items that need to be addressed to the exterior building and grounds and report accordingly. d. Other duties as may be assigned.
