JOB CLASS: Instructional Aide
REPORTS TO: Building Principal – Edinboro Elementary School
FLSA: Non-Exempt
SCHEDULE: 180 days/year; Monday-Friday; 8:45am to 3:45pm (excludes lunch)
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is to provide instructional support to students, assist classroom teachers with non-instructional duties, and provide support in different areas of the school as assigned. Employees in this position are expected to provide courteous assistance to students and staff.
ESSENTIAL/CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist the teacher with non-instructional duties
- Assist the teacher in guiding and supervising students
- Work with individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher
- Support students with classroom/homework assignments
- Provide instructional interventions as assigned by the MTSS Academic Coordinator
- Manage student behavior in the classroom, cafeteria, at recess and/or dismissal as assigned
- Follow established procedures to ensure a safe and secure environment
- Utilize the school-wide behavior program to teach, enforce, and retrain students in the established school-wide expectations
- Provide support in any area of the school as needed
- Assist in greeting students each morning
- Support operations of the school by providing assistance with office/clerical duties, including answering phones, filing, mailings, and/or document preparation
- Special duties as assigned by Building Principal
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school graduation or equivalent (required)
- Minimum of two years post-secondary education or Associate Degree (preferred)
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
- Must maintain updated state required clearances
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Skill in communicating with children and adults
- Ability to work with elementary age students in a supportive and guiding capacity
- Knowledge of and experience in an elementary school setting preferred
- Knowledge of Student Information System (PowerSchool)
- Ability to learn new software or equipment as needed
- Ability to demonstrate patience and compassion when dealing with students
- Ability to communicate clearly orally as well as in written and electronic formats
- Ability to use correct grammar, sentence structure, and spelling
- Ability to use an iPad for the purpose of communication and data recording
- Ability to use a copier
- Skill in organizing materials and information, electronically or physically to allow for efficient retrieval of information
- Knowledge of Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations and how they may apply to sharing student information with various stakeholders who may be requesting information
- Knowledge of effective methods to engage diverse members of the community to promote positive relationships in collaborative working relationships
- Interpersonal skills used to work effectively with teams including skill in managing conflict or differences of opinion between subordinates or supervisors
- Skill in adapting to fluid work situations or adapting to changes in expectations, procedures, or technology used on the job
- Problem solving skills using creativity, reasoning, past experiences, and information available to overcome challenges on the job
PHYSICAL WORK DEMANDS:
- Ability to work in a sitting position for extended periods
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to sit, talk, and hear
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crawl and move quickly when necessary to promote student learning and/or safety
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Ability to speak clearly and distinctly
- Ability to work as a member of a team and in an environment with frequent interruptions
