Position Summary:
The hospital registrar fulfills the important role of admitting patients to the hospital. Primary duties include greeting patients and families and initiating the medical record, both written and electronic. The registrar is responsible for quality patient registrations by obtaining thorough and accurate information in a timely and efficient manner and entering this data correctly.
The registrar collects personal data as well as payment information and verifies health insurance coverage which includes entering, updating and verifying all data necessary for the patient, and third-party payers. The registrar also verifies insurance coverage and enters the information into the registration records. Along with handling payments, the clerk will gather signatures for all required forms. The Registrar is also responsible for answering the phone, as well as delivering messages to the appropriate person.
Essential Functions:
The Registrars functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Admit and register patients on day of procedure
2. Handle general inquiries
3. Ensure all papers are properly filled out and input into system.
4. Maintain daily schedules.
5. Enter and verify that all patient demographics and billing information correctly entered/verified at time of check in.
6. Process encounters daily for and balance to co-payments.
7. Collect balances due at time of check in.
8. Direct patients to relevant areas of building.
9. Answer phones.
10. Obtain signed statements.
11. Record payments.
12. Perform tours.
13. Keep admission desk clean and organized.
14. Perform insurance data entry.
15. Contact nurses and doctors about surgeries and meetings
16. Demonstrates safe work habits through compliance with work-related policies and procedures
17. Adheres to policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
18. Demonstrates cost consciousness through efficient use of time, materials, staff, equipment, supplies and available resources.
19. Consistently utilizes spare-time to benefit unit, patients, and co-workers.
20. Provides directions to areas within organization.
21. Establishes and maintains a good rapport and cooperative relationship with medical staff, co-workers, supervisors and others.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Registrars responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Continuously assess and improves the department's performance.
- Completes the Orientation checklist for new employees in the department and orients to new technology, procedures
- Completes and maintains skills necessary for position (refer to Competency checklist) including orientating to new technology, procedures etc. necessary for position.
- Employee reflects and is supportive of Edgewood Surgical Hospital to the hospital’s ethical and compliance principles in his or her daily activities.
Qualifications:
- Must possess good oral and written skills, must be able to communicate with hospital contacts both on the telephone and directly, and effectively communicate with all age groups, populations, and individuals within the hospital.
- Must have the physical ability to maintain a medium percentage of sitting standing with a low percentage of standing and walking. Lifting is light with some frequency of lifting, bending and reaching over head. Occasional pushing/pulling, kneeling or climbing ladders.
- Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature changes. May be exposed to: chemicals, hazardous waste, communicable diseases, blood and bloodborne pathogens.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments and work independently with minimal supervision.
- A professional approach to work including a strong sense of responsibility for assigned duties.
Education:
- High School Diploma (GED); some college education preferred
- Consistently seeks out continuing education activities relevant to practice areas. Attains initial and mandatory training as defined by hospital guidelines.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Computer skills (Word, Outlook, Excel & PowerPoint).
- Skilled in the use of hospital computer systems preferred.
- Previous medical and clerical experience preferred.
- Medical terminology knowledge preferred.
- Knowledge of CPSI system preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $16.00 per hour
