The Respiratory Therapist/Education Coordinator provides high-quality respiratory care while coordinating organizational education initiatives that support clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, and employee development. This hybrid role delivers evidence-based respiratory therapy services to patients with pulmonary diseases and conditions, performs diagnostic testing and other cardiopulmonary services, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes.

In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, the Respiratory Therapist/Education Coordinator serves as the organizational coordinator for clinical education programs, including oversight of American Heart Association (AHA) training, competency management, and educational initiatives. The position partners with department leaders, Human Resources, clinical instructors, and staff to coordinate orientation, competency validation, continuing education, and simulation activities that promote a culture of safety, lifelong learning, and regulatory compliance.

The Respiratory Therapist/Education Coordinator ensures that patient care and educational programs meet the quality standards established by Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, professional practice standards, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements. The incumbent maintains the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe, effective, and developmentally appropriate respiratory care to patients of all ages while supporting the organization's strategic goals through clinical education and staff development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Respiratory Therapist

  • Performs Assessments designed to gather data relevant to patient’s individual needs.
  • Develop/implement plan of care to meet individual patient/family needs.
  • Conduct Pulmonary Function Testing and ensure it is read.
  • Administer patient nebulizer treatments.
  • Setting up and monitoring of patients on artificial ventilation.
  • Responsible for airway management.
  • Drawing of Arterial Blood Gases, and ensuring they are delivered to the lab.
  • Setup and monitoring patients on a CPAP and Bi-PAP.
  • Monitoring Sleep oximetry.
  • Perform spirometry.
  • Performing of EKG’s on inpatients and outpatients
  • Performs Cardiac Stress Testing including exercise stress testing, nuclear, and stress echo.
  • Assist physicians with bronchoscopy.
  • Oximetry checks on inpatients and outpatients.
  • Metered Dose Inhalers administration.
  • Assist with employee fit testing
  • Monitor portable oxygen delivery systems and exchange as necessary.
  • Assure availability and appropriateness of all respiratory emergency equipment throughout the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned that are within the scope of Respiratory Therapy practice and competency.
  • Assist with development, data collection, and resulting departmental Quality Program.
  • Assist in other duties as assigned and/or requested to meet day to day operations of the department.
  • The positions essential functions require the handling or use of hazardous drugs.
  • Position requires compliance with department specific competencies.

Education Coordinator

  • AHA Site Coordination:
    • Serve as the primary coordinator for the American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center programs at EHHS, including Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
    • Collaborate with AHA instructors to develop and maintain the annual course schedule.
    • Coordinate learner communications, including course registration, pre-course requirements, and required course materials.
    • Maintain the AHA Requirement Tracker in Relias in collaboration with Human Resources to ensure timely completion of certification and recertification requirements.
    • Ensure instructors have the necessary equipment, supplies, and resources to successfully conduct courses.
    • Maintain current AHA program materials and implement guideline updates in accordance with AHA standards, including revisions following the five-year guideline release cycle.
    • Maintain eligibility to serve as an AHA Instructor and provide instruction for BLS and other AHA courses (optional)
  • Facilitate Mock Code Drills
  • Competency Management: new equipment/supplies in collaboration with department Directors
  • Oversee the education budget, including monitoring expenditures, coordinating educational resources, and supporting budget planning to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Assist with new staff on-boarding processes, as needed, in collaboration with department directors.
  • Provide support to Directors for education initiatives that align with the organizational strategy
  • Provide respiratory education and training to EHHS staff, supporting orientation, competency validation, continuing education, and the implementation of new respiratory therapies, equipment, and evidence-based practices.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited respiratory care program
  • 1 to 3 years of respiratory therapy experience preferred

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR REGISTRATIONS

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification for healthcare providers is required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required
  • Current State of Wisconsin License Respiratory Care Practitioner is required
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) is required
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is preferred
