Estimator
Position Overview
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for a variety of projects. This role involves reviewing drawings, specifications, and project documents; performing quantity takeoffs; obtaining subcontractor and supplier pricing; and developing complete bid packages. The estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to ensure estimates accurately reflect project scope, schedule, and requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Estimating & Cost Development
- Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand scope and requirements.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Develop complete and accurate cost estimates, including direct and indirect costs.
- Prepare bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and supporting documentation.
- Analyze drawings for potential cost-saving opportunities or scope gaps.
2. Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination
- Solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Evaluate bids for scope accuracy, competitiveness, and compliance with project documents.
- Maintain a database of vendors, subcontractors, and historical pricing.
3. Project Collaboration
- Work with project management and engineering teams to align estimates with operational methods.
- Participate in project handoffs and support project teams with budget clarification.
- Assist in change order pricing and value engineering efforts.
4. Market & Cost Research
- Stay current with market trends, material pricing, labor rates, and equipment costs.
- Update internal cost databases and productivity factors regularly.
5. Process Improvement
- Recommend improvements to estimating tools, templates, and processes.
- Support training and mentoring of junior estimators, if applicable.
Qualifications
Experience
- 3β7 years of experience in estimating (general construction or relevant specialty).
- Proven experience with cost estimating software and digital takeoff tools.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical specifications.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and estimating software such as Bluebeam, ProEst, Sage, PlanSwift, or similar.
Pay: $65, $78,512.60 per year
