Estimator

Position Overview

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for a variety of projects. This role involves reviewing drawings, specifications, and project documents; performing quantity takeoffs; obtaining subcontractor and supplier pricing; and developing complete bid packages. The estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to ensure estimates accurately reflect project scope, schedule, and requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Estimating & Cost Development

  • Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand scope and requirements.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracted work.
  • Develop complete and accurate cost estimates, including direct and indirect costs.
  • Prepare bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and supporting documentation.
  • Analyze drawings for potential cost-saving opportunities or scope gaps.

2. Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination

  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Evaluate bids for scope accuracy, competitiveness, and compliance with project documents.
  • Maintain a database of vendors, subcontractors, and historical pricing.

3. Project Collaboration

  • Work with project management and engineering teams to align estimates with operational methods.
  • Participate in project handoffs and support project teams with budget clarification.
  • Assist in change order pricing and value engineering efforts.

4. Market & Cost Research

  • Stay current with market trends, material pricing, labor rates, and equipment costs.
  • Update internal cost databases and productivity factors regularly.

5. Process Improvement

  • Recommend improvements to estimating tools, templates, and processes.
  • Support training and mentoring of junior estimators, if applicable.

Qualifications

Experience

  • 3–7 years of experience in estimating (general construction or relevant specialty).
  • Proven experience with cost estimating software and digital takeoff tools.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and estimating software such as Bluebeam, ProEst, Sage, PlanSwift, or similar.

Pay: $65, $78,512.60 per year
