IBM MQ Administrator

Role OverviewThe IBM MQ Administrator is responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting IBM MQ environments across distributed platforms. This role needs to ensure secure, reliable, and high-performance messaging infrastructure to be built/configured to support enterprise applications.Key Responsibilities

• Installation & Configuration:
• Install and configure IBM MQ on distributed platforms (Windows, Linux, UNIX) or z/OS.
• Set up queue managers, queues, channels, listeners, topics, and subscriptions.
• Administration & Monitoring:
• Manage MQ objects and monitor message flows.
• Ensure high availability and disaster recovery setups.
• Perform performance tuning and capacity planning.
• Security & Compliance:
• Implement SSL/TLS security, certificates, and access controls.
• Apply patches and maintain compliance with security standards.
• Troubleshooting & Support:
• Create needed dashboards/tools for monitoring the MQ’s performance. Generate alerts based on thresholds desired
• Diagnose and resolve MQ-related issues in production and non-production environments.
• Provide on-call support and participate in incident management.
• Integration & Collaboration:
• Work with development teams for application integration with MQ.
• Document configurations, SOPs, and provide technical guidance.
  

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Technical Skills:
• Hands-on experience with IBM MQ v8/v9 or higher.
• Strong knowledge of MQ architecture, clustering, and distributed queue management.
• Proficiency in scripting (Shell, PowerShell, Python) for automation.
• Familiarity with MQ monitoring tools (MQ Explorer, AppDynamics, Dynatrace).
• Understanding of networking and messaging protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS).
• Platform Knowledge:
• Distributed OS (Linux/Windows)
• Soft Skills:
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Effective communication and documentation abilities.
• Preferred:
• IBM Certified System Administrator – MQ.
• Knowledge of ITIL processes for incident/change management.
  

Nice-to-Have

• Experience with containerized MQ deployments (Docker/Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with cloud MQ services (AWS MQ)
  
  

Java/J2EE Engineering & Debugging

• Develop and enhance Java-based producer/consumer services (Spring/Spring Boot); integrate via JMS and native MQ client.
• Expert debugging: thread dumps, heap dumps, GC logs, JDBC connection pooling, transaction boundaries (XA), race conditions, deadlocks, memory leaks, serialization issues.
• Optimize code paths for high-volume messaging; implement resilience (circuit breakers, retries, idempotency, exponential backoff).
• Write high-quality unit/integration tests (JUnit) and ensure CI/CD pipelines gate quality.
  
  

Debugging & Observability

• Thread/heap dumps, JVM profilers (VisualVM/YourKit/JFR), GC logs
• MQ diagnostics: AMQ logs, message tracing, channel status, queue depths
• Monitoring: Metrics/logs/traces; alerting on lag, throughput, consumer failures, redelivery counts
