Primary Purpose
: The goal of the Sergeant is to protect the lives and property of the students, faculty and staff, and provide for their welfare through crime prevention activities and aggressive enforcement of laws and to provide first line supervision for police officers engaged in general and/or specialized police work; works in the field and in the office.


Qualifications:


Education/Certification:


  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED certification required.
  • A higher education level is highly desirable.
  • Possess a valid Texas Driver License.
  • Possess a TCOLE Advanced Peace Officer Proficiency Certification.


Special Knowledge Skills:


  • Knowledge of criminal law, investigation, and crime prevention techniques.
  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence and the laws governing the custody of persons.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the police and procedures manual.


Experience:


  • Achieved the rank of Corporal within the ECISD Police Department.

No sustained internal complaint(s) within one year prior to promotion.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:


  • Provide first line supervision for police operations and take command of field incidents.
  • Serve as back-up for situations requiring assistance as necessary.
  • Ensure that proper policies and procedures are followed and that all actions are in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Make periodic checks of police facilities and equipment, officers’ appearance and work quantity/quality, safety procedures and overall officer conduct.
  • Prepare annual evaluation of officers and conducts counseling sessions from these evaluations.
  • Prepare monthly evaluations and conduct counseling sessions for probationary officers.
  • Make recommendations to the chief on personnel matters such as transfers, promotions and disciplinary matters.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records and analyze performance records of probationary officers at the end of their probationary period.
  • Make recommendation to release, extend or terminate.
  • Conduct conferences and counseling sessions with employees to resolve problems.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of officer conduct and counseling for future reference.
  • Actively participate in the training of personnel.
  • Enforce state laws and city ordinances.
  • Answers calls for assistance from the public.
  • Supervises preliminary investigations conducted by officers and conducts these investigations as necessary.
  • Collects evidence and completes reports as necessary.
  • Confer with officers on cases returned for further information and/or correction.
  • Ensures corrective action is taken.
  • Read all paperwork generated during a shift for correctness and completeness.
  • Approves paperwork and directs it to the proper follow-up department.
  • Ensures all officers are accounted for and that officer’s work assigned hours.
  • Ensures necessary information is passed on to the chief.
  • Investigate fleet accidents, takes appropriate enforcement action and makes recommendation to management as to any corrective or disciplinary action to be taken.
  • Assume responsibilities and duties of the chief in his/her absence.
  • Testify in court.
  • Conduct internal and external investigation of subordinates.
  • Makes recommendations for disciplinary action.
  • Create and maintain shift files and records of personnel, complaints, reports, arrest and citation production.
  • Schedule personnel so as to ensure the necessary number of officers are available to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Ensure district equipment is properly maintained, accounted for and available for use.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of local, state and federal laws and recent changes to those laws.
  • Pass this knowledge and information on to subordinates.
  • Inspect district facilities for security and equipment for serviceability.
  • Report discrepancies to appropriate personnel.
  • approve all arrests made by subordinates
  • Prepare special reports as needed and requested.
  • Serves on various boards and committees within the district as requested.
  • Communicate program activity to the chief.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
